Neil did a wonderful interview, as always! And tell the truth - you liked the music, didn't you? ;) That was a very fun show to do. Leavening all that world myth and sound with Gaiman's "Sandman" I thought was the perfect way to go. Very glad you found us.
There are other Sound & Spirit programs featuring interviews with contemporary fantasists: Jane Yolen on "Fairy Tales" and Terri Windling on "Surviving Survival" - and Michael Swanwick on "The Lord of the Rings!" Enjoy.

[...] The Young Man of Providence is a 43-minute BBC Radio dramatised documentary, dug up from Halloween 1983 and online as an mp3. It’s a mix of narrated documentary and his letters, with occasional fragments from the stories read by old-school BBC-quality actors and mixed with FX. The best Lovecraft documentary, I’d say. I wonder if it might be worked up into an unofficial fan-film documentary? It could be carefully expanded to feature-length by inserting new narration-free sections (contemplative Ken Burn-style pans across archival materials and evocative landscapes) to slacken the galloping pace that a 40-minute radio programme necessarily enforced on the producers.
2. The hero's disinterest in studying up on magic and the magical world does come back and bite him pretty hard throughout the series, so his reasonable and unreasonable motives for staying in denial as much as possible are a big thing. Affects his relationship with his vampire buddy also, as you'd imagine.

2. And they also cut out most of the IT/computer references. Again, I sympathize, because early Nineties references became dated very quickly. But if you soften the hero's computer-guy nerdly status, you don't really understand why he's actually not too interested in his supernatural powers as a wizard. He's got better things to do than cast spells, as he explains in a fair amount of detail in the original.

2. "without all the fannish and pop culture jokes" which were cut out by the English translator.

Also the subplot of Queen and Russian classic rock songs as prophecy and commentary (not as explicitly as in Tom Deitz), which make a soundtrack for the reader. I'm more sympathetic to leaving this out (cheaper, less rights-wrangling) but it was fun. (And I learned about Russian 70's rock because of it.)

3. It's possible that the narrator was trying not to be as emotional as the movie of the books. It's also possible that he was reflecting the very dry tone that some characters take during very emotional scenes (because they're concealing their emotions or making jokes of them).

Ah, well. Someday it'll be a musical, probably, and then we'll have emotion to spare. Also a really good bass part.

1. Lukyanenko rocks.

2. The novel is a lot sadder and more serious without all the fannish and pop culture jokes, but it also misses a lot of pointed satire of Russia's semi-embrace of Western culture in the early 90's. Since this is one of Lukyanenko's big concerns in his novels, that's a big shame.

I hate the new audio format. You used to have a way to download an MP3 file and I could listen to it on my iPod while I was working. Now there is no way to download what used to be on MP3s that I can see. I don't want to sit at the computer to hear a story.

I Have to say, owning both copies of this, George Wilson is the better narrator, I went so far as to buy the cassettes and have a friend take them to work and rip them to digital for me, Lloyd James is great narrating some other works but this book is NOT one he does well, emphasis on the wrong words and after having listened to george...lloyds reading makes me grind my teeth.

having let a few people listen to both side by side, general consensus has agreed with my opinion on this.

Hi:
I found out about this Breaking Point through a brief mention of it you made on SFF Audio Podcast, while discussing The Status Civilization. Status was a fun book to read (listen to), so when you made the comparisons to Breaking Point, I went and looked it up on Forgotten Classics. I'm going to listen to it soon.
Hope I get the same thrill as from Status.

There's another, more Owellian way to read this story. Substitute "Big Government" for Madison Avenue and "politicians" for Fascinators. This alternate view is more easily seen when you recognize the real meaning of the term "crony capitalism". Our current administration has mastered this technique. Wake up!

I might be wrong but I believe I'm right.

Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000190631 appears to be the first fraudulent document created and filed with a government agency in a scheme to conceal the copyright status of 25 literary works by Philip K. Dick with intent to be continuously used to deceive and defraud people and businesses financially and to deprive people of their First Amendment rights under color of law.

Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000190631 appears to be a materially false statement made with intent to be referenced and otherwise used to create more instruments of criminal deception, conceal many false representations in existing and future business contracts, conceal false representations in future documents (sometimes filed with the U. S. government or state governments) and the basis for abusive, extortionate and otherwise threatening communications with people in the form of letters of demand and/or cease and desist letters.

Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000190631 appears to be a falsified document which has been used and continues to be used to criminally monopolize interstate commerce and international commerce and artificially raise prices of more things in more ways than is immediately apparent.

Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000190631 appears to be the basic fraudulent document relied on to commit fraud against the United States, individual states and local governments including but not limited to cheating military and public libraries which have purchased books and other materials at artificially inflated prices due to false claims of copyright in public domain works.

Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000190631 and its spawn appear to be used to violate state and federal laws such as the three cited below and due to the continuous nature of violations it seems the applicable Statutes Of Limitations and Limitations Of Actions for some of the violations have not expired.

15 U.S.C. § 1 : US Code - Section 1: Trusts, etc., in restraint of trade illegal; penalty

Every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal. Every person who shall make any contract or engage in any combination or conspiracy hereby declared to be illegal shall be deemed guilty of a felony, and, on conviction thereof, shall be punished by fine not exceeding $100,000,000 if a corporation, or, if any other person, $1,000,000, or by imprisonment not exceeding 10 years, or by both said punishments, in the discretion of the court.

http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/15/1/1

15 U.S.C. § 2 : US Code - Section 2: Monopolizing trade a felony; penalty

Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations, shall be deemed guilty of a felony, and, on conviction thereof, shall be punished by fine not exceeding $100,000,000 if a corporation, or, if any other person, $1,000,000, or by imprisonment not exceeding 10 years, or by both said punishments, in the discretion of the court.

http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/15/1/2

18 U.S.C. § 1001 : US Code - Section 1001: Statements or entries generally

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, whoever, in any matter within the jurisdiction of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch of the Government of the United States, knowingly and willfully -
(1) falsifies, conceals, or covers up by any trick, scheme, or device a material fact;
(2) makes any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation; or
(3) makes or uses any false writing or document knowing the same to contain any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or entry;
shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years or, if the offense involves international or domestic terrorism (as defined in section 2331), imprisoned not more than 8 years, or both.
(b) Subsection (a) does not apply to a party to a judicial proceeding, or that party's counsel, for statements, representations, writings or documents submitted by such party or counsel to a judge or magistrate in that proceeding.
(c) With respect to any matter within the jurisdiction of the legislative branch, subsection (a) shall apply only to -
(1) administrative matters, including a claim for payment, a matter related to the procurement of property or services, personnel or employment practices, or support services, or a document required by law, rule, or regulation to be submitted to the Congress or any office or officer within the legislative branch; or
(2) any investigation or review, conducted pursuant to the authority of any committee, subcommittee, commission or office of the Congress, consistent with applicable rules of the House or Senate.
