The 1990s was full of mystery in Canada. Weekday broadcasts on CBC Radio featured more than a dozen detectives in fully dramatized mysteries. This was a result of The Mystery Project. Perhaps the most listened to series under this banner was Midnight Cab, a half-hour mystery show about a 19 year old Toronto cab driver named Walker Devereaux. Here’s what Thrilling Detective has to say about Midnight Cab:
One of the best series airing as part of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s The Mystery Project is Midnight Cab, which was aired in three runs of 13 episodes, 9 episodes, and 13 episodes (making a total of 35 episodes for the series).

The show starred David Ferry as WALKER DEVEREAUX, a young man, rather gullible and naive, from Bear River (north of Lake Superior) who comes to Toronto in order to become an author and winds up driving a cab on the midnight shift. From the start, he keeps running into problems (such as that body that someone left in the trunk of his cab), and he solves the mysteries with the help of his girlfriend, wheelchair-bound Krista Papadopoulos (who dispatches cabs), Alfonso Piatelli (his boss), and Metro Police Inspector Wilfred Kiss (a friendly homicide cop). Each episode is fairly self-contained, but the series builds on its past episodes as well, so we see Walker’s developing relationship with Krista, his coming to terms with the big city, etc.

Hi: As the performer who played Krista in Midnight Cab lo these many years ago, I was happy to hear from CBC, who asked my permission to re-air some episodes for the 75th Anniversary broadcast on November 3rd, 2011 (today). It got me feeling nostalgic and I asked them for digital files or a CD of the series for my archives. But they don’t have the resources to provide them. I was excited to find this page, but the links don’t seem to be working anymore. Is there any way they can be reactivated, so that I can download them — or is there a CD available from anyone? It’s nice to hear that Midnight Cab is still remembered and loved nowadays… I loved being a part of it in my early career. Thanks for any help!

I’ve only been able to listen to two episodes of ” Midnight Cab” on CBC’s Rewind website and have been searching for weeks for a site where I could either purchase or download the episodes. Sadly the links provided above are not working- could someone please tell me of another site? I am so very intrigued by the programme and just have to hear the other 33 episodes.. Thanks in advance for any help.
Jacqueline, I was working in a production company in the early 90s, and I’d make sure I had enough work to do so I could listen to Midnight Cab on Wednesday afternoons so I wouldn’t be interrupted for that precious half-hour.
My scheme didn’t always work, I often missed an episode, or was interrupted, but mostly, I was able to sit and listen to the whole episode, and I loved every one.
Now, thanks to the internet, I have all of the episodes in audio format, and listen with iTunes. (For some bizarre reason, one or two of the episodes are slower than they should be, so everyone sounds a little slower… but who cares?)
I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how much the show meant to me, and that I just wrote a novel about a homeless investigator in Boston, and self-published it through CreateSpace and Amazon. I can say fairly certainly that I never would have written it if not for Midnight Cab, and the great vocal performances therein!
So thanks. You made many of my weekly workdays far more enjoyable, and you still do.

I’ve noticed that almost every summary of the series says that Walker is from Bear River. He clearly says he’s from Big River. The problem with OTR and other radio shows is that the people who research them seem to do everything except actually listen to the episodes.
Midnight Cab is one of the best radio shows ever made and everyone associated with it should be proud of themselves.
