JAMES POWELL

James PowellJAMES POWELL (1932 – ) A Canadian author of more than 140 published short stories. Powell tales often mix Mystery, Humor, Crime, Science Fiction and Fantasy. First published in April 1966, he has sold more than 140 published short stories to such magazines as Playboy and Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine. Most Powell tales, including his most popular, have been published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. His writing is relentlessly logical, often hilarious, and swift. He is an absolute master of the short story. Powell is what’s known in the business as a “pussycat writer” meaning he doesn’t put sex and violence on the page, if it happens in the story, it all happens off-stage. Powell stories have been reprinted in The Best Detective Stories of the Year and The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror anthology series. In 1989 the readers of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine voted his A Dirge For Clowntown their favorite story of the year. He is also the recipient of the Arthur Ellis Award for the best short story of the year.
