A cloud across the moon can change the entire face of the night. It changes the way some people change their clothes… the way women change their hair.
— “God of the Razor”, Joe R. Lansdale

This CD contains two episodes from The Grist Mill audio drama series. The first is Joe R. Lansdale’s God of the Razor, which finds the protagonist confronting a weird guy in an empty house who talks about moons and clouds and eyes on his razor. (Note to self: if a weird guy mentions the word “razor”, it’s time to go, regardless of whether or not he sees eyes on them.) Like it says on the box, this one’s not for the squeamish.

Next is Mort Castle’s If You Take My Hand, My Son, which is a wrenching tale of a man who, after an accident, sees his father, who he had had a terrible time with when he lived. Is the man’s urge to reconcile with his father stronger than his will to live?

The audio drama is first rate – excellent actors, great sound, and two stories that are well worth hearing. So, if you are looking for a chill this Halloween, this collection would be an excellent choice.

Three audio dramas (two episodes on the CD) from The Grist Mill! These titles are horror, very well done. Radio Drama Revival says: “Slasher” is just a startlingly awesome piece of audio, the best of the best out there.

“God of the Razor” – Master horror writer Joe R. Lansdale introduces us to an ancient razor and the sinister god who controls all who use it. WARNING: this audio is NOT for the squeamish.

“If You Take My Hand, My Son” – Mort Castle’s audio play that tells the tale of a reconciliation between a father and son that takes place beyond the grave; a reconciliation with terrifying results. Taken from his book “Moon on the Water”.

Review of Bubba Ho-Tep by Joe R. Lansdale

Elvis Aaron Presley is living in a Texas rest home. See, he really isn’t dead because he’d switched identities with an Elvis impersonator years before his so called “death”. Also occupying this old folks home is an elderly black man, call him Jack, who claims to be former President John F. Kennedy. When a lurking evil in the form of a soul sucking Egyptian mummy starts killing the residents its up to JFK and Elvis to take it out. Good thing it’s 3000 years old because Elvis’ hip is out and he still hasn’t gotten the hang of his walker.

Wait a second, we don’t review DVDs here! That’s right we don’t – normally. But this DVD has a special feature, an audio excerpt of Bubba Ho-tep, the original novella as read by the author Joe R. Lansdale. This phenomenon of special features on DVDs has yielded a few radio dramas in collector’s editions of old movies before – but this is a recent film so I was juiced to see that it included the original story
as an extra. Too bad Lansdale reads only the first chapter of his Bram Stoker Award nominated novella.

What little is there is ribald and crude and pretty funny. The reading is accompanied by still images from the film. Too bad it’s just the first chapter. With all the useless making of special features out there you’d think they could at least give us the full story.
