Being a Hungarian, I think, I have to add a little correction to the discussion. The story is written and happens in the 1800s, or in the first years of the 1900s but before 1919. You should have taken a look at a map of the 1800s. Upper-Hungary of the 1800s is the current Slovakia. It is a bit less close to Transylvania. Also, the name Elspet is more like the Slavic version of Elisabeth than the Hungarian.
