Rabkin, who liked the book?, very meh about both, better than Prize Ship, in retrospect, one is way better than the other, thematically they’re very similar, so much time in the setup to get to a gimmick, weird set of rules, pre-1900, a glider to scout out the thing, both stories have gimmicks, a ton of time to setup that doesn’t pay off justified by the length, what the ship does, let’s go visit him in his sick bed, let’s have a cigarette, not his best story, Will weigh in, more generous to Mr. Spaceship, socialist labour party, the United States and the Soviet Union are converging, welfare capitalism, the worldbuilding, the sociology, almost like a gadget story, why are we doing this, he kept that part really short, 2 and a half pages, the ethics of the mercenaries, poor people, complete utter misery, they have their tranqs, Philip K. something to a friend and regretted it for decades, that kind of punishment of yourself, out of duty, that’s hilarious, it points in every direction, the pain is in every direction, we’re all fools is the takeaway, people who’s trauma is so minimal, the worst thing we’ve ever experienced is the worst thing we’ve ever experienced, terrible things happen to them, live to tell the story, Pangloss human behavior, tie yourself to the mast of a sinking ship, a huge mistake, the comparison is almost perfect, both abstractions and connectable, an up and down, trying to appease an idea of god by burning somebody at the state, punished by an earthquake, a good thing to do, the exact opposite happens, either god making a joke of it, the god of this book is Voltaire, a planet spanning book, Dick, so bad at writing military stuff, goes into the bathroom for a shower, the towel tries to kill him, comparing notes, “I trusted the rug completely”, rugs all the way down, stable in the new meta, that’s true for us too, we learn to wiggle our legs and arms, runaround and grab cookies, why am I using this walker?, who I am again?, nobody gets out of this alive, the way to approach it, slavery is bad, let’s sell him into slavery, seems objectively more dangerous than ours, even with its problems Europe is more stable, we have other problems, he was right, laughter is the solution, not trusting anything, have a good laugh over it, is that an ism?, probably, you have an ideology, I like this, it’s not manicheanism, what is it?, lying is bad, first strategy, what is my ideology if I haven’t spelled it out, cosmicism, a follower of Jesseism, “there is no recognizable divine presence, such as a god, in the universe, and that humans are particularly insignificant in the larger scheme of intergalactic existence”, that’s fun, don’t worry about it, you’re nothing but a mote of dust in the beam of a sun with a short lifespan, does it require, ideology: define, “a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy”, against copyright, it’s used as a censoring tool, a free speech absolutist, give em 10 years if they want, why not?, making it infinite, reasonablism?, eclectic, between Jesse and Jesse, do dogs have ideologies, they like bones, a set of behaviors, bring animals into a conversation, we are talking weird chimps, dogs don’t have policy, a special and rare and precious person, a very strange lady, a nice person too, strong will, not good when you are a little kid and have no defenses, tricks and techniques, an anti-ideology, ideologies make you week by outsourcing, not wanting to be weak, I like being effete, do you have the power to be as weak as a baby, putting on diapers, a weak colon, if you have a fetish, you wanna be a weak baby seems insane, weak like an infant, we all start off as infants who are weak, a newborn child, protected from insects, it’s mind is innocent, weakness and strength together, being obsessed with not being weak, lifting seems kinda silly, the only what is happiness, for a bear, rubbin against trees, what is happiness for a human?, ships or airplanes or tacos, doing intellectual works, writing poems, the real place where strength is needed, in the intellectual realm vs. lifting crates, quit the gym, new popular fads, all sailor related, pulling ropes and flipping big tires, get stuff off the ship, these are not sailors, sit for 8 hours, just observing, what kinda car they’re driving, they wanna be buff, skin salons and teeth whitening and nail salons, not a lot of personality improvement stores, a philosopher who gives you good argument, that’s why you got to Socrates, you don’t want to be mentally weak, that would hurt you, Paul in the New Testament, being spiritually strong vs. being physically strong, criticizing the use of physical strength, the psychological and intellectual training, the name Plato, broad or wide, short, he looks like a plate, he’s wider than he is tall, he’s a wrestler, wide in his variety of thought, a soldier wrestler, that was his nickname, I’ll wrestle you actually, bro, what is Plato’s real name, Aristocles, slave, time to work on your body and your mind, wrestle at symposia, where everything happened, some CBC guy on BlueSky, obscure social media network, Stephen Quinn of CBC, those Convoy types, we’re not the 51st state, getting ready for Flag Day, the day they switched the flag, the Suez Crisis, “peacekeeping”, if you call soldiers peacekeepers, Lester B. Pearson, why does Australia have the same flag, and New Zealand, why do they all have the Union Jack, pretend they’re not part of the British empire, a distinct society, we’re just these friendly dudes, Canada’s third way is to be the bully’s best friend, take nukes on or Bomarc missiles, laugh at Canada, because the TV told you to, don’t listen to the TV or radio guy, everyday is Flag Day in the USA, Jesse is mentally strong, Candide can help you mentally strong, if they’re not a mental baby, re-readable for one, the chapters are really short, a few jokes per chapter, like an episode of Friends, the cast of Friends in the adaptation of Candide, Buenos Aires, Abraham and his wife Sarah, just my sister, their relationship as brother and sister, a Wikipedia, a pun referring to the female genitalia, they’re brought up in a castle together, Candide is the son of the sister of the baron, not fully quartered, missing one of his provenances, at the very least they’re cousins, the reason he was disabused he was hanging out with her, they were half-siblings, son of the baron from another mother, that would make him the heir, the bastard heir, avoid more incest, underreporting, some of the scenes are elided, they don’t say they ate her buttock (but that’s what happened to it), chased away from his uncle’s home, marauding soliders, a lot of what could be seen as anti-jew, did you finish your podcasting?, soon!, not offended by this Jew talk, more Jews to sell more diamonds, everybody is equally stupid and lame, a comedy of humanity, are they half-brother and sister legit?, quite reasonable, keep it in the family, keep the money, fucked up stuff, the philosopher is fine with it, the best of all possible incest, the worst of all possible incest?, the final question: who is the idiot?, who is the fool philosopher, Pangloss, we all murdered each other, it’s fine, he has to say he believes in it, clarified right at the end, is this truly the best of all possible worlds?, from Suriname to Bordeaux, the philosophical conversations, so much analysis and stories, the funniness, tend to your own garden, clean your room isn’t the end of the story, god you stink you really need a shower, smell yourself first, I wanna shave more, that beard looking real raggy, bro, in terms of nations too, what Canada should be saying to the United States, trying to fix what’s going on in Suriname, we’re not states, we’re individuals, clean your room, check your messages, email is a scam, the dollar, a podcast on The Declaration Of Independence, the Federalist Papers, it makes no sense, 51st through 63rd, does PEI get it’s own state?, potato wars, Greenland’s not getting a statehood, Panama wouldn’t get a statehood either, the Canal Zone, why we getting worked out about, covered in comic books and printer cartridges and toilet paper, thank you guys, a good story to read, makes you laugh and think.

The SFFaudio Podcast #852 – Jesse and Alex (Pulpcovers) talk about Beat To Quarters by C.S. Forester

Talked about on today’s show:
The Happy Return aka Beat To Quarters, more exciting sounding, the drum, red alert, double red alert, get to your stations, spoken in the book, in searching twitter, a conversation, Cirsova, C.S. Hornblower Books is hard science fiction, anything set in space is not science fiction, flawlessly longical, the Honor Harrington books, same initials, same idea, career arc, broadsides in space, he crafted his science fiction technology to require broadsides in space, Star Trek was modeled after Horatio Hornblower, Picard’s character research, the tight-ass personality, badly reminded, a Hornblower scene on holodeck, when they did it on the show, recreation, sex fantasies, Worf’s going there to get stabbed, the Sherlock Holmes investigations, they’re doing their own recreation, trying to get your boss and the guy who does the photocopying to play your D&D, this works as a book, read this as a kid, always loved, a certain amount of wishfulfilment for the author, not a Mary Sue, kind of a jerk, see me being a great captain, very novel, the Horatio Hornblower tv series, you can’t do interior stuff in TV and movies, voice over narration, have somebody tell you what Conan’s feelings are, Subotai, almost completely through the eyes of Hornblower, the careful crafting of a first time author, intended to be a book series?, an established writer, brought to Hollywood to write a pirate movie, Hornblow and Bush, Captain Blood (1935), Errol Flynn, hounded by the prospect, hopped a freighter, voyage with this woman, a Wellsley, her name was Barbara, falling in love, an unfaithful womanizer, a guy who delivers the meals, lends itself to series, the romance, almost doesn’t fit, it’s fun, Sharpe is a response to Hornblower, Hornblower on land, comedic fat guy, a wagonmaster general, Baron Harkonnen, the same actor doing essentially the same role, a fat diplomat bad at his job, Ian McNeice, the main guy who’s awesome, men he has to convince, everybody think’s he’s great, seems like very very Mary Sue, counterbalanced, going bald, so obsessed with his own image, he refuses to talk to anybody, hm hmm, the narrator does a lot of hm hmmming, the 1951 adaptation, almost the entire novel, 2 other books, very faithful, the interiority, the officers betting, are we gonna die before we find shore?, the fawning, do the same job, C.S. Forester worked on the ship, a very Hollywood thing, the female servant some generic south american brown skinned person, so much shoepolish, El Supremo, so cartoonish, Aubrey–Maturin, Master And Commander Far Side Of The World (2003), first exposure to audiobooks, a lot of sitting, poetry, the double meaning of words, Jesse’s favourite joke, I was impressed by the British Navy’s recruiting methods, works both ways, very stupid, institutions being very bad, hospitals, they’re everywhere, they turn the people they work in them into soulless drudges, doing their best within the system, an impressed sailor, volunteers as well, a bigger part of the navy than it really was, when there’s no war there’s not a lot of impressment, dockyard, the rum ration, an institutionalized way of controlling people through drugs, stories from the 1950s, alcohol usage, excited about getting the rum, Pervitin, amphetamines, single seater aircraft, they don’t issue it to for you every day, SS and tanks, Robert Shaw, dye job, Battle Of The Bulge (1965), From Russia With Love (1963), keep pushing those tanks, worked against the French, institutions like prisons or mental hospitals, old-folks homes, during COVID, Ontario, getting uppity, drugged them, keep em calm, keep em under control, a certain feeling, part of your pay, not enough to get drunk on, double rations, a nice buzz, horrible work, a lot of pain, a miserable job, making people into cogs, the best example of that in a positive sense, in the next book, drilled and perfect, an incredibly well honed crew, prisoners and landsmen, kidnapping a bunch of guys, amateurs, weeks whipping them into shape, to be able to run up the mast, a lot of Hornblower is forming a mentality in the men, that image is represented, walk the deck, make sure they see him, keep that pot-belly down, Gregory Peck, by special arrangement, in their stable, these guys are like impressed sailors, under contract, thanks to Warner Brothers for giving us to this movie, Sony owns some of Marvel, if we wanna have the Spider-Man, just the character, TV shows, ER for all those year, a Michael Crichton show, Remington Steele, to be Bond, prevented him from being Bond for a while, Tom Selleck didn’t get Indiana Jones because, The High Road To China (1983), opens with flogging, starts the same way, to blame, Mr Bush, do you know why I’m flogging this man?, he was fighting, sir, more careful about what you say, that leadership, that aura, a few times, a lot more needing to show, the movie stops right after they blow up the other ship, our ship in rags, a cut, shipshape, the island, careening, unnecessary, why is it in there?, he has to be a complete man, fell in love with, writing about what you know, having him married, Wellesley, wife is dead, a very happy ending, a new family, someone else’s baby, widower and widow, the cheating we anticipate is made all fair, bigger ship of the line, his boss the admiral, they get married right away, I guess she really didn’t love me, he resents his own wife, lost two kids to smallpox, an act of parliament, remain this faithful husband, I hate her, back to war, captured by the French, his boss’ widow, they can now get married, a pure adaptation of the first three novels, a bit long for a film, fantastic, he’s not British is he?, Cary Grant, shove em in Europe and it is find, is this a science fiction novel?, no, but, are those science fiction novels if they’re built on this structure, a kind of technology, not future technology, understanding how these ships, work, oh!, I bet it is real, when they’re becalmed, he has the sailors wet down the sails, years at sea, sails are better, we have boat engines, you take down your sail, a little outboard, no need to rely on precision, there is one scene in the first Honor Harrington Jesse read, first time writer’s mistake, the captain looking in the mirror describing his shape to us, my hips are a little wide, especially prominent with female characters, I’m not happy with my double ds, many men have told me, too big of a tush, bad writing, oh really, it was brief, the men seeing him standing on deck, that double picture, it isn’t complete over the shoulder or into the mind of our hero, at two points in the book, Lady Barbara, down in the guts of the ship, Florence Nightingaling, Crimea, Sevastapol, physically demanding, this kind of nursing is not really women’s work, holding some hands and here’s your pill, explicitly excluded, pressing women to become nurses on ships, their better relationship to come, acting like a mother to one of these dying Scotsman, how to kiss him the way he wanted to be kissed by his mother, on the eyes and on the lips, he dies, that’s how the mom kissed him, acting as a mother, a good mother to his son, a similar scene, jumps out of the text, she and he are heavy petting, my poppet, in loving terms, except as a child, baby language, how people talk to each other, child honey, wife honey, very action packed, business oriented, the El Supremo incident, in the Pacific near Nicaragua and Panama, her packet being taken, already come around the horn, the return journey, asked Grok, the name of the island they fixed, the Isle of Pigs, Grok might be lying, there is an island in the right spot, in the Pacific that’s pretty obscure, on their way to the Horn, named after a pirate, a volcanic reef with a central body of water, on the wrong side, in the Coiba Island, Panama, sticking to the history, how many times did the Spanish change sides during the Napoleonic Wars, mostly from Sharpe, Spanish allies, conflict with other stuff, fictional, comparable, so cartoonish, much more like a Star Trek episode, on some planet, Hitler in hiding, Thanos action, to save food, The Conscience of the King, they don’t have discipline, a lot more guns, sunk, the local Indians recruited, except for the officers, very interesting, a background contempt, the negress, Hebe?, lock her up, she won’t stay away from the men, technically, she won’t stay away from a man either, she’s the fictional sister, a Red Sonja situation, invented a sister, just means God, worshiped as a god, if Kirk was in this situation, one of the guns that doesn’t go off, the money never comes up again, even just as ballast, the movie version of Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World (2003), pulling from at least two books, the colon in the title, should have had a sequel, beautiful in execution, everything that’s good in this book amped up, the model work is fine, the Peter Weir movie, the captain and his doctor, McCoy and Kirk, stop at the Galapagos and sort of pause, all the horror of the battles, the strategy is even more amped up, give you a sense, feel the weather, usually books are better, why people get addicted to reading the whole series, fun, interesting, the historical setting isn’t so faked, The Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, nothing matters, talking about Tortuga, just flags you can throw up to get you excited, a fantasy town, a fake culture they’ve slapped a real name on, outrageous behavior, verges on that, all of the British people watching, this guy is crazy and terrifying and weird, people being tortured, whipping is something we should try to avoid, his general/admiral, the cartoon of every dictator of every cartoon, a dark mirror of Hornblower, expect instant obedience, other books, a complete psychopath, a kinship, maybe I’m a complete psychopath, he has orders to follow, what will they think if I do this, lose my commission, go on half-pay, I have to follow my orders, that gold in the hold, that niggling feeling, not the perfect, what’s next?, it has all the goods you want, he pretends to be a whaler, trickery thing, in the Mediterranean, the Spanish French coast, you got three days, go cause some havok, switches flags real quick, trickery stuff, Star Trek, they’re on the frontier, going to places on the edge of explored space, space cops, Mudd’s Women, he’s a space cop, that’s illegal, the worst episodes of Star Trek, the only British ship in the entire Pacific, stolen maps, a 300 year old map, doing their business, they know the shore, this is not the safe and happy Caribbean, this is the far frontier, the aluetians, Fred Heimbaugh, Typee by Herman Melville, swim in, hiding out, Pacific Islanders, Tahitians!, you guys are in terrible shape, are they gonna taste us, bein nice, cut up by brambles, hungry and thirsty, it rains, they make a house in 10 minutes, food is abundant, a little bit of rain, life is easy on these islands, the opposite experience, the water has green things, skin’s opening up, Melville was gay, you look sexy, the women don’t worry about that unless you’re king, marry their sister, let’s go swimming, different sort of culture, cannibals on this island, over this mountain, point back over the other side of the island, the Pitcairn Island experience, Hawaii, hide until the ship leaves, they go to Tahiti, steal a bunch of women, burn the ships that nobody can leave, the Fletcher Christian story is a nightmare, a mutiny, the mutiny in the Bounty, 1789 – 1808, concerned they’re gonna jump ship, it interacts with the idea of El Supremeo, a mirror of Hornblower, no one can judge him, not even God can judge him, bound by his duty, reduced by looking in the mirror, how much balder he is, I wish I had a bow for my hair, unchecked, do whatever you want, Kirk seems to violate orders all the time, bound by the organization, specific orders, loyalty to the king, never gets punished for it, they throw him in the briar patch, a recapitulation of the Nomad space probe episode, gee whizz, very psychedelic, every year in the background, while you’re not paying attention, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) is getting better and better, The Wrath Of Khan, the space battle, also has Genesis, Star Trek VI is even moreso, he killed his son, he hates Kahn, it’s not personal, on a mission, prevent a war, a big space battle, the audience hates this guy, prevent that, Christopher Plummer, in the original klingon, I hate klingons, Star Trek IV, go back in time get some whales, back to the future, admiral kirk we’re demoting you to captain, solid ending, very bad all comedy Star Trek V, what does god need with a spaceship, product placement for marshmallows, with the nebula, clouds, comin out of a fog bank, coming out of a shoal, what the spanish ship is doing, whist, a rubber, Phileas Fogg, Around The World In 80 Days, the raid, take the ship, very cartoony in space, spock says he’s thinking two dimensionally, we think 3 dimensionally because we live in space, why Cirsova is right, they’re both right side up, the invisible ocean of ether, assembling for fleet battles, only when they’re sinking, listing to port, the horizon in space, the Constitution with Decker, planet killer [The Doomsday Machine], scratches a similar itch, a thesis, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and F&SF, a set of premises, these are the things that are possible, Will Emmons, another nautical guy, L. Ron Hubbard story, they’re not really science fiction stories because none of the premises he work for matter, mass to fuel, there is no wind that can suddenly save you, tides are super-goddamn predictable, otherwise your ship will sink, measuring the bottom, the tide situation, that stuff is very science fictional, the clocks, the solution being clocks, not the way we do it now, it’s all about clocks still, the difference between the two clocks, it tells us stuff, it’s science fiction in the sense that it plays by a certain set of rules, use them as weapons, makes this book worthy, ships and boats, he’s taught me, just research?, his first wife had a great uncle British naval captain, autobiographies of himself, the captain, manual of seamanship volume 1, look everything up as we need it, he’s studying for his lieutenant’s exams, a scenario like the Kobayashi Maru, dismasted, an attack outside, superheroic, commissioned lieutenant, about to fail, Kirk cheated on his exam, a test of character, TNG, some girl gives him help, leave one of these aliens behind, it was all a simulation on the holodeck, makes you grow as a man, all stolen from this, boosted so much, 20 of those, they’re chunky, this book was 7 hours, the next book in the series, Captain Horatio Hornblower, back to England, he’s rich, prizes, a son, Commodore Hornblower, invasion of Russia, fun, not as good as the first block of book, how series work, Killers Are My Meat by Stephen Marlowe, farmer, lady wants to ride a horse, disposive of their character, in certain genres, historical war novels, there was another battle, the war kept going, on the far side of the world for it, the French don’t show up in this book at all, an interesting setting, how the Sharpe series, Sharpe’s Tiger, Sean Bean, old retired guy, a weird phenomena, a new Dexter tv show, based on a novel, when the show becomes more popular than the original novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, a post-one, the voiceover, recast everybody to play younger versions, James Remar is the father figure, taught him the code, you’ve got a dark passenger inside you son, the guy from Heathers (1988), Christian Slater, impressions, as close as possible, muppets and then muppet babies, Dexter with Muppet Babies, Miami Vice with an 18 year old Crockett, we don’t want old Sean Bean, old Harrison Ford, that’s all they’ll give us, still uncanny CGI deaging, a flashback, digitally deaged, fuckn move on, wrong accent, the historical setting, the weird deep, thugees, the second Indiana Jones movie, the Sankara Stones, it’s quite complicated, Kali is not all evil, most contemporary media is content with broadsides in space, war story with a historical setting, Overlord (2018), that’s not how it was, at least Quentin Tarantino holds it for the end of the film, attention to historical detail is superimportant, space magic, the original tweet, three year journey, why is it called The Happy Return?, something he’s returning from, reason to be returning, didn’t get the girl in real life, she didn’t die?, the Barbara from the boat, he’s kind of a jerk, not a super-heroic character, a lot of self-doubt, overcome self-doubt, his self-doubt drives him to do stupid things to a lot of people, good at math, cheats on both of his wives, a little bit of a terrible person, if I don’t do it it will look bad for me, let things happen to people, socially awkward, undermine my dignity as a captain, sold on this book in the battle, takes so long, the way it accelerates, let’s see what we can do here, the bodies start piling up, dropping fake wood on top of people, my midshipman, where’s his head, a powderboy turned into red mist, obliterated by a cannon ball, super-humanitarian, not allowed, there’s no way to do it, parodic, historical examples, everybody on the Island is named Christian, a contest for who’s going to be in charge of this harem, pretty fuckin hardcore, disciplinary captain, the recapitulation, well plotted book, a big success, in the canon of things people hear about, Greyhound (2020), Tom Hanks, theaters were closed, sold it to Apple, worthy of attention, always like that in his films, a big anti-fan of Castaway (2000), box of chocolates movie, extremely boomer, fan service for everybody, Zelig (1983), Woody Allen, a forgotten piece of history, the evil it is showing into a Hallmark card, Saving Private Ryan (1998), the D-Day opening, trying to convince this team of guys, some dude, his brothers are dead, fake, why is this worth it?, they didn’t do that, they let 8 brothers die on a ship, they changed the law, all 5 Sullivan brothers died, all stuck on the same ship, dropping into Normandy, Matt Damon, I gotta fight this battle, fight with him to protect him, Ryan gets home, cuts to old man Ryan at the cemetery, these guys all died to save me, the Titanic, that’s why Jesse rejected it, The Good Shepherd, sounds weirdly religious, one of those Christian movies, a war movie, Fury (2014), the anti-Saving Private Ryan, the opposite of sentimental, sentimental war movies, The Four Feathers (2002), Heath Ledger, 4 movie versions, a good story every time, Chinese Gordon era Sudan, a very unfamiliar setting, not well explored, the Great Game is happening, central Asia, what is now Pakistan, Kim by Rudyard Kipling, where does it fit in the chronology, the Crimean War, the Boer Wars, filling in those details through history, start researching the very small details, using chatgpt, all about crafting question, you have studied international relations, a ten point plan for peace in Palestine and Israel, you’re gonna have to lie, the two state solution, who was the badguy in WWII in WWII one sentence answer, now who is the badguy in the Gaza-Israeli conflict, it’s really complicated, the clear picture from the perspective in history, the much easier and cleaner, details smoothed over, the victors are telling the story, I can’t believe you said that, everyone involved in dead, the Huns invaded that was bad, the basic way of going into any question, you wanna buy a stove, that guy’s gonna try to sell you a stove you don’t need, Amazon, the first step, a hot topic in the news right now, we can learn that way as the first step, don’t do that because it is bad, a good book, not a bad book, despite the mirror scene, in the first of a lot of books, that period uncaring sloppiness, the sensitivity of your descriptors, we’ll fix this by not having her represented at all, more colour, literally, the casual racism, anti-Spanish, yep, she’s black, kinda slutty, these assholes, so sloppy, so arrogant, predictable too, while that ship is approaching, Suprize!, the Lydia is not much of a name, the Pluto, the Sutherland, just a name, the Terror, Pellew is mentioned, the Indefatigable, Dreadnought, the Victory, The Four Feathers by A.E.W. Mason, collaborative, good old books, Ben-Hur, a 24 hour book, a big book, looking forward to it, a really good story, how many film versions?, a silent, the Charlton Heston, an early 2000s, a tv miniseries, see you on the internet.

The SFFaudio Podcast #852 – AUDIOBOOK/READALONG: The Hate Disease by Murray Leinster and The Rat Racket by David H. Keller

The SFFaudio Podcast #852 – The Hate Disease by Murray Leinster (2 hours 1 minute) read by Gregg Margarite and The Rat Racket by David H. Keller (35 minutes) read by Robert Griffin. These are followed by a discussion of both. Participants in the discussion include Jesse, Will Emmons and Terence Blake.

Talked about on today’s show:
Terry’s back!, The Hate Disease by Murray Leinster and The Rat Racket by David H. Keller, longer than it needs to be, judge the two stories, science fiction, crappy science fiction, neither was terrible, as you should, a paradox, looks like what Terry considers to be the formula for science fiction, take an idea and literalize it, physicalize it, resymbolize at the end to draw a moral, The Pied Piper Of Hamelin, a mob or racketing technique, psychological phenomena, Gaia striking back, very similar, one comes across as a science fiction story, in Weird Tales, weird fiction, Keller is more of a science fiction guy, Amazing Stories, 1931, the fantasy domain, the very last sentence, all he wanted to do was get rid of the rats, he’s a cat!, whenever I talk about it my voice becomes squeaky, the science fiction mode, the setting, contemporary setting, menace to society, non-Anglo Saxon force, urban science fantasy, genius for hitting at vital spots, in the context of Scott Miller’s recording, racketeering, if you look at it closely, doesn’t seem to, The Minions Of Midas by Jack London, bought the premise from Sinclair Lewis, perhaps they’re all the same premise, outside threatening force threatens capitalists, letters slipped to a local billionaire, those who are sending the messages, kill some unrelated person, find some blacksmith, until he pays the money, we never meet The Minions Of Midas, this is necessary in this period of time, a certain amount of capital, require $20 million dollars, redistribute the wealth, resolves itself, he’s tackling essentially the same problem, racketeering was a real thing, the technology is cities and telegrams and being anonymous, email is incredibly anonymous, never not monitored, free email accounts, a cybercafe, a burner yahoo email, telegrams vs. emails, Jack London’s point is much more amazing, what if that Pied Piper story was real, takes a long time in their setup, we like Murgatroyd and coffee, the mystery that’s going on, a little boring, it doesn’t need to be that long, the setup at the end is pretty stupid, the comeuppance, James Bond, A View To A Kill, the son of genetic engineering, blow up silicon valley, microchip company’s profits, falls out of the sky, the Med Ship story, a problem of the week story, symbolically it’s very interesting, the doctor running the planet, the chief minister of the planet, Dr Lett, a bloodletting, just let it happen, he deserves a presidential pardon, the solution, getting some woodsmoke in their lungs, sounds stupid, maybe this is a lot smarter, the ecosystem setup, no reliable native life forms, humans expanding forever, Malthusianism, we can expand forever into infinite galaxies, rats have been known to do that, Malthus, rats and rabbits multiplying past endurance, other molecules, don’t feel ripped off, not a make work project, the Amish, they’re farmy, cheap farmland, a story about Mennonites, met Mennonites, a bigger diaspora of them, all about vertical integration, repairable by themselves, they can fix carts, a religious prohibition, don’t buy phones from Apple, an interesting sentence, Hutterite children, protected from asthma, an associated citation, more in contact with farm animals as a child, associated theories, being too sterile, handwashing using alcohol with perfume, hand sanitizer, more likely to get warts, other problems, dry skin, a similar contention with lip balm, lip balm scientists, balm is medicine for skin, how The Hate Disease solved the mystery it setup up, a powerful idea for the time, checks and balances on the molecular level, they’re in Overdrive, an alien pet, drinking coffee, outlandish space opera drinking tea (in modern science fiction), same symbolic register, cozy and homey, into electricity so much, a gas fireplace, some apartments do not come with fake fireplace and an actual fire, heat register, underfloor heating, cold in the winter, fire is the solution, rural Kentucky, a country merchant, if you were a farmer, hang out around the pot-bellied stove, decorum, have to be a gentleman, farm animals and fire, American science fiction, a parochial literature, born and died in Virginia, went for a drive, last summer, be near farm animals, a petting zoo, not intensely popular, recreation for young people, a “carnival”, a rollercoaster, thrill rides, you really do want to pet a donkey, confined to cats and dogs and maybe a parakeet, you wanna hang out around cattle, and sheep, donkeys are cool, kept donkeys, spending time with the donkeys, different personalities and capabilities and interests, playing some game on his laptop, can I go feed the chickens?, something that people want to do, more and more disconnected by technological improvements, a deprivation, concentration of capital, the park vs. the woods, they’re bears in their, chaotic neutral bears, brown bears, grizzly bears, Central Park in New York, managed wildlife, swimming to an island, you’ve had the experience of getting a leech on your leg, water and air, everything else is imported, they forget to import the really important things, safteyism, hygienic, technological, Tallien, talion, Gaia, the planet fights back, a character from history, Jean Talion, the Reign of Terror, don’t communicate with the other, waiting for Dr. Fauci, some special med guy, a special injection, ground up worms, the toxin, a good mediation, The Strain, once you adopt a certain code of behavior for yourself, if you become vegan, the spreading of it, Terry was one for a while, a vegetarian, many years, more than 7 years, don’t violently attack you, carnivores, something so contemptible within yourself, being the only one, an evil act, you’re in the Israeli army, you gotta make him do it too, otherwise, go back to normal functioning, you can’t what Jesse’s doing at your grandma’s house, attentive to dirt on skin, the cleanliness and making things sterile is a good instinct, the rub some dirt on it, it can go too far, the meeting of the two genders, they were effeminate, like Jurassic Park, nature found a way, an effeminate man, a little bit of a reach, maps to Jesse brain, females don’t exist in the future or the 1930s, The Last Woman hey is pretty cheap, a series of sheds, the cow palace, you probably get a truck, not hauling donkeys, much bigger than dogs, much smaller than horses, they’re mostly tall and leggy, just pure muscle, The SFFaudio Podcast #851 – AUDIOBOOK/READALONG: The Jameson Satellite by Neil R. Jones and Mellonta Tauta by Edgar Allan Poe

The SFFaudio Podcast #851 – Prize Ship by The Jameson Satellite by Neil R. Jones (53 minutes) read by Josh Horowitz and Mellonta Tauta by Edgar Allan Poe (36 minutes) read by Drakaunus. These are followed by a discussion of both. Participants in the discussion include Jesse and Will Emmons.

Talked about on today’s show:
The Jameson Satellite, Amazing Stories, July 1931, Mellonta Tauta by Edgar Allan Poe, Godey’s Lady’s Book, February 1849, also in Amazing Stories, Novemwbr 1933, tweeting is writing, pair it with something, an interesting pairing, thematically connected, a sommelier, tasting notes, one is much better than the other, we can agree, Neil R. Jones, as a story, good narrator, rough, short, intervening period, the sentence are pages long, makes it harder, one over the other, a “better story”, story is the wrong world, a meditation, congeries, a disorderly collection, a jumble, densely packed, a few through lines, human values have utterly changed, we’re told and then we’re shown, the wrong way to approach literature, what to put out there, edifying ideas, Edgar Allan Poe probably believed intuition was stronger than a posteri logic, just sort of there, social criticism, we don’t even care if people die, maybe Poe thought that, a very hard to understand man, 1840s is not our period, a different world, when talking about Poe, had he lived a few more years, the wrong side, we all implicitly know this, you could argue that he wouldn’t of, would have wanted to have been involved, one of the facts, stumbled through, plowed up, people’s takes on this story, his grandfather was a general in the American Army, somewhat inovoled in espionage, tried to become an officer, he went to West Point, cipher stories, stories not considered difficult, he’s gotta show his brain, this mess of a story is amusing and full of interesting things but as a story is terrible, easily captured by interesting details, hooks, you can love it even though it’s not a good story, a very solid story, what?! stupid, being on track, when he falls into the volcano and breaks himself, he calls out psychically to the aliens, your brain is different, suspense shit, artificially make it bad, works incredibly well, similar cosmic scope, 40 million years or whatever, Edgar Allan Poe with his 7 diary entries, given how old it is, 100 years older, super-old, 180 years old, do some math, 2025 – 1848 ?, 177 years old, buy it unbound, copies of that in a bound form, newspaper is pretty sketchy, a flyer, designed to be ephemeral, no waybackmachine for 1849, some weirdo hoarding, basement or loft, a promotional book put online by Land Rover, a 10 year old reading experience, all that stuff is not preserved by the waybackmachine, the audio and the javascript, just think about plays, surreptitiously recording a play, perfomred and lauded and respected, minor notes in a magazine in a newspaper, both of Poe’s parents were actors, you can still go to Ford’s theater, not the same actors, with regards to preservation, a theme of both of these stories, really fun, seems silly, with the radium, when he preserves his body, the story is made of elements, a bad chemistry metaphor, plans to preserve my body, references to the ancient egyptians, all those premature burials, a grave preserved for the lifetime of your loved ones, keep my ashes in their house, for religious people, bodily risen up by Jesus, preserve the bones, coffins and graveyards and memorials, the boomers are moving towards cremation, need land reform for graveyards, people take up a lot of space, morality about bodies, wars are good, the presumption, Solander’s Radio Tomb by Ellis Parker Butler, Pigs Is Pigs, eventually becomes the tribbles story, Martian flat cats, normal stories, An Experiment In Gyro Hats, Radio News, December 1923, a giant radio, speakers, a comedy story, revised slightly, a lich who gets his wish, the things in his will done after his death, a religious radio station, codicils in his will, give sermons, moving their graves out, the changing attitudes, if enough people don’t like jazz anymore, the radio station becomes unfashionable, a very similar idea, orbiting the earth, way past that, there is no character involved, the earth becoming tidally locked with the sun, all very fun, thinking about my own death, first dead man on the moon, sort of useless, an elaborate tomb, a nice bed, a cup of water beside the bed, free wifi, students can drink their starbucks on the steps of my tomb, where it could start, he’s no longer in his own body, he’s materially no longer himself, there’s no left and right anymore, he has no body, ears don’t seem to be thing anymore, or sleep maybe, or eat, autotrophic, a tiny bit of philosophy, sort of benevolent, what’s going on in the universe, great idea!, travel to all those planets out there!, contrast that with Mellonta Tauta, best friend/husband, wants to annoy, Poe is leaning into it, opposite philosophies, death vs. transcending death, a collection of observations about the 19th century and what is real, we are probably in a giant galaxy orbiting a black hole, it’s deep, one is shallowly deep, deep and easily dismissable, good in their way, Will can dig it, the climax, considering suicide, the benevolence, you could come with us, contemplating suicide, staying with the dead thing, staying with the dead earth, bury your loved one, jumps into the grave with the dead person, the alternate way, allow that person to be buried and visit a lot, dead and can’t respond, having been orbiting the earth not just his whole life, very cool, visiting the graveyard all the time, transitioning between life phases, accumulate mementos, throw away part of yourself, throwing away the possibility of being reminded of it, orients us, fixate on those sorts of things, different possibilities, the price of going out into the universe, leave behind this dead thing, a price you pay, he has that thrust upon him, really dramatic moments in the story, it’s fun and interesting and not self-aware, that era of science fiction, not true of Poe at all, gets in the way of himself, the audio version, sometimes excluded is the editorial introduction, hopefully the readers will, hopefully you guys get it, I don’t know, fun and funny, whenever presented with a fact through words, especially through words, it’s blue now, long story short that’s a false claim, you know Jesse’s nature, telling an untruth, in a story especially in print, the propaganda works, January 6th was an insurrection, if repeated enough, McDonald’s catchphrase, I’m lovin’ it, whoever I am, whatever it is, you become the I, more McDonalds, Hardees, Carl Jr.’s, same kind of situation, breakfast later than McDonalds, the getting up late lifestyle, many unhealthy things, physical constitution, Lord grant me chastity but not yet, reiterate, really good science fiction, really naive and fun, that deep time element, most science fiction stories of the period, associate with Lovecraft, The Shadow Out Of Time, vegetable men, aliens, a professor who has his consciousness transported through time, vegetable bodies, a mindswap, from the ancient earth and outer space, have a family, not consensual, they’re not even they’re just explorers, Douglas Adams, how big space is, almost Star Trek, the natural result of keeping down the TNG path, smoothed out and smoothed out, Lt. Brocclis, pursuing the interests, helping each other, eventually what they are, they don’t EXTERMINATE!, talk to them, cutely naive and nice, cynical with takes he wants to give you, our balloon is crashing, whatever!, that’s fine, I wrote it for my own benefit anyway, he’s great, he needed to get these ideas out there, when not drunk, not a good drunk to be around, doesn’t have people he can talk to, experienced with demons, both parents dead age 2, won’t even adopt him, loves one, hates the other, intellectual problems, kinda have money, nobody understands you, too many hormones, be more calm, go by days, sections by days, thematically organized, April 1st, he knows what he’s doing, foredated, displayed until, looking at march magazines on the newsracks, dated ahead, the year is 2848, probably when it was published, early early January at the latest, 1000 years, puzzle stories, largely the inventor of detective stories, other than possibly in China, Judge Dee, an analogy at best, reading Roman novels, watching the latest Star Trek Section 31 movie, it is that different, they don’t map together, Lucian of Somosata, it’s not science fiction, weird laurel, is it science fiction, Hugo Gernsback would say so, self conscious, the materials available, extends to be still valuable, because of its comedy aspect, Now my dear friend, a long gossiping letter, a comedic engagement and science fiction, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, the floating disc places with scientists, he’s taking apart science of his period, a really interesting argument, not really trying to tell us about technology, what science fiction is about, how knowledge of the universe changes us, the ruins of the island of Manhattan, fixing up the palace’s yard, a time capsule, the starting stone of a building, improper deductions, a way of attacking his period, Godey’s Lady’s Book had illustrations, they look like turkeys, April 8th, Eurkea!, a balloon from Kanada, late papers, Amerikan antiquities, a new fountain at Paradise, an island time out of mind, a rivulet, the whole length of the island is 9 miles, densely packed with houses, 20 stories high, the year 2050, wherewith to build up even the ghost of a theory, they were of a great portion of the Knickerbocker tribe of savages, pants, some allusion, a knight of the Golden Fleece, after a fashion of their own, acute in many respects, the poe phrase “monomania”, a kind of pagoda, wealth and fashion, an attack on modern New York, natural protuberance, in the light of beauty, miraculously preserved, a turkey cock and a dromedary, a savage attack on women’s fashion, the contents of the cornerstone, likely to have been a dealer in corn, they must have turned him into sausages, as a kind of science fiction, science fiction-like in many respects, it doesn’t work as a story, it works as an artifact, reproduced in the newspapers, undercooked, why are they on this balloon?, other balloons, above and below, having its gas changed, so infested with people, not fully supported by the story, travelers through the sky, no evidence that they’re powered, floating, travel by train at 300 miles per hour, Pundit and Pundita, people of the future, too undercooked to be a coherent story, two angels talking to each other, a dialogue, those are something but they’re not science fiction, worthy of being included in a science fiction magazine, a curiosity, allow that analysis, the canons of the short story, he’s a pioneer, we don’t know what to expect, The Complete Poe, a story or a fable, subtitles, an essay, The Philosophy Of Composition, how poetry should be made, The Raven, a space filler, the word magazine, the part of the shop where the gunpowder is, argosy essentially means magazine, its full of good stuff, these metaphors extend and change, a piece about hansom cabs, ruminating for a moment on hansom cabs, robotic looking a new technology, a two wheeled vehicle pulled by a horse, watching Sherlock Holmes tv adaptations, a new tech, patented in the UK, what’s it like to ride in an uber, here’s a Poe something, its not a short story, The Premature Burial, articles and anecdotes, a story at the end, The Cask Of Amontillado, a confession piece, Guy de Maupassant, and Hemingway, a form of art, doing a skit is not a play, sing, Shakespearean plays, bums in seats, in the direction of science fiction, precluding it from being science fiction, a way of judging and classifying, this piece is a good piece but not a good short story, is this a good novel?, no, just finished Dune, too long?, seductive, Frank Herbert, he could be wrong, complete and enough, a good novel as well as a good story also an evil story and scary, Paul’s doing what’s right here, not as a 13 year old boy, many 13 year old boys have read it, exposed to moral complexity, great bene gesserit characters, rich and smart, full of the ecosystem shit, wheels within wheels and plans within plans, surprising and scary and revealing, should we use people as objects to accomplish our goals, especially if we want to live, why are the Harkonnens bad and the Atredies good, at least worse, Leto vs. Paul, values people more than anything, muddled, lost perspective, the worm is coming, the scene that shows his character, reunited with Gurney Halleck, equipment vs. people, going in we’re on Paul’s side, that betrayal, they value people, tools to be used, squeeze and squeeze, betrayed by one he was good too, what is the lesson there?, a rich and difficult world, solid solid, Confucius would say, better to be like Leto and die, warrior prince, doomed by our position, what’s good about the book, complex and rich, the more Paul becomes fucked up the better the book becomes, a decent payoff, it’s unexpected and yet inevitable, different readings of it, Frank Herbert misunderstood Paul, snippets on social media, just reference the book, look at what objectively happens, talk about Gollum all day, ultimately what happens, too compelled by that heroin, or Smeagol, a certain intention, what Gandalf said, the author doesn’t matter unless they’re pointing to a particular piece of text, authors can be wrong, whom amongst us knows what’s in our own mind, explains some part of your psychology or interest, more than just intention, actual text, another mind can model it, part of our job, engaging with it and understanding, “Paul was good actually”, he becomes a knife fighter, I’m a friend of Jamus, all his names, the responsibility that comes with having killed Jamus, he’s there to survive, his mom is a user, being used, evil masterplan, Leto was used, have sex with this girl, she is pretty sexy and smart, to his true love, gotta marry the emperor’s daughter, negotiations about the dowry, the sister is so weird, in almost every respect, her position in the book is strange, that’s the trap, don’t fall in, the seduction, the movies of Dune, hurt Will’s reading of Dune,
