Talked about on today’s show:
done in French, as a person, very European, very funny, a few digs on France, complaining about Canada, fighting over a few acres of snow, super-dense, an interesting introduction, a good argument, Michel Houellebecq, Lovecraft, Against The World Against Life, the only book most people ever read by him, notable works, The Maid Of Orleans, on the list since a teenager, apocryphal meeting, Benjamin Lay, Catherine The Great of Russia, very popular, a rock star to your inauguration, birthday dinners, I am the king of Poland, I am also the king of Poland, a lot of the jokes, you should read this book, really funny, nice and short, new jokes this time, slaves, hit with a bull’s pizzle, a whip, a pizzle is a penis, penne, pen and pencil, dog treats, cattle’s pizzles, not a valued menu item (except with dogs), the sex throughout, the rape jokes, the rude jokes, hit with a bull’s penis, makes so much sense, the names are all funny, candid, telling you the secrets, an offshoot from the story, in a library, 501 Must Read Books, classics, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, writings about his wife, Surprised By Joy, drawn from the name of the character, the etymology wrong, cunnagonde, good pussy, a naive narrator, horrible looking, gotten stubborn, a dig in on some Jesuits, throwin digs, really good at making pastry, all based on a real guy’s philosophy, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, all is for the best, the best of all, Spinoza, “the best of all possible worlds”, high end reading at the time, addressing the problem of evil in the world, how is that compatible with a loving god, it couldn’t be any better, the minimum number of horrible things happen, he could have made the world worse, people suffering, god did his best, a number of postulates, an important conclusion to have, a defense of god, god did his best, taking the piss on this idea, suffering is bad, a consolation, a baby run over by a truck, birth defects?, who are they good for?, god gave me this burden because I’m strong enough to carry it, a Robert Frippism, suffered in interesting ways, a grateful comearound, an opportunity to develop, especially addressive of the world, earthquake, a more beautiful or safer city, balcony collapse, kid got squished, so did a cat, just throw a cat or a racoon in there, operate on the assumption this is a silly idea, the universe is as best it could be, human beings being meat eaters, eating cows is mean to cows, you can’t have jesse without him being a carnivore, be like the Maasai turn their dicks into pizzles for whipping people, a dog nuzzling a duck, Leibniz is right, the corollary to this, the worst of all possible worlds, how so, there isn’t another world, we imagine another planet, if the laws of the universe are consistent across, implies alternatives, counterfactual, just as truthfully, the point of this philosophy is to give you consolation, balconies fall because of gravity, become better engineers, make earthquakes survivable, we didn’t make the world, god did his best, a convoluted way of making yourself feel better, re-meetings, misfortune, still beautiful, stomach cut open, ravished by work, he’s been hung, everything is okay in the end, it was for the best, cultivate your garden, a compatible and also good philosophy, worried about Jesse’s mental health with regard to the politics, Canadian flag bullshit, talking to boomers, people stuck in tv mode, upset about what’s happening that you can’t control, bitter and wrong, make some PDFs, to read some more books, the resources to watch the murder that’s happening in Gaza, reasons for sharing, a compatible philosophy, all the philosophies, very funny and fun book, ten thousand thoughts an hour, a bookshelf rooted, notes and biblography of Jordan Peterson’s Maps Of Meaning, Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 And The Final Solution In Poland, that book is 70 hours long, The Rape Of Nanking, committed suicide after wrioting it, Unit 731, more brutal, go cold, realistically a good framing, a blunt tool, having birthday cake, about as simple and effective, can’t they just have your cake it and eat too, it’s awesome, not a natural disaster, a human folly story, pride and empire, we are better people, huge human mistakes, as best He could, full of sin, choice, a dumb guy who thinks that a guy who’s a philosopher is much wiser than he, disabused, audited the others, the number 3 version on LibriVox, spot on, very solid [John Van Stan, narrator], more Voltaire, Zadig, interested in the origins of the detective story, Sherlock Holmes was ripping off Poe, Voltaire did a comedic detective before, in the same style of Sherlock Holmes, C. August Dupin, a series of misfortunes happen to him, he observes things correctly, the colour of the horse, missing a horseshoe, a bit of fur caught on a treebranch, dog ran away, Micromégas, Scott Miller’s podcast, busy making new stuff, hallucinating, he was really good, contacted, a breakdown, they went nuts, will you forgive me type message, their gut torn open, kicked out of the castle in Germany, Portugal, at the house of a woman, the person that you loved, let’s talk, two or three thousand words of response, a weird thing, the plot as it is, each chapter tells you what happens as the title, trunks, fartcastle, mooning over Cunégonde, maid, mistress to the Don in portugal, I can tell a story better than you, I only have one buttcheek, she’s not just the daughter of a king, she’s the daughter of a pope, Roman Catholics, that’s part of the joke, illegitimate children, everybody knows, the world in this book is very fallen, everything is full of sin, the enhancement, the story of misery, Brazil?, Argentina?, line up a whole bunch of dudes to tell their horror stories, horror stories of life, their horror story is they got bad service at a restaurant one time, never done something to a friend and regretted it for decades, that kind of punishment of yourself, out of duty, that’s hilarious, it points in every direction, the pain is in every direction, we’re all fools is the takeaway, people who’s trauma is so minimal, the worst thing we’ve ever experienced is the worst thing we’ve ever experienced, terrible things happen to them, live to tell the story, Pangloss still believes , it has to still be true, a very good mocking takedown, just tend to your garden, you can work on yourself a lot easier than other people, you should lift more, if lifiting is the thing you think is important, the manichaeism, Martin, in Suriname, El Dorado, Utopia by Thomas More, Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, women chased by monkeys, the monkeys were biting their butts, sexual dimorphism, they breed with monkeys to a certain degree, quarterings back in your ancestry, one of the quarterings was missing 75 countings back, I am the rightful king of Brittany, a lot of people still believe in and operate, such a short amount of space, comparing it, a sleep after shooting, in the Bulgarian war, an ultramarksman, without rustling the leaves, whipped so hard, I was impressed by the British Navy’s recruiting methods, have some cash, nah man you’re good, how do you feel about the king of Bulgaria?, you’re in for life, you’re in the army now, boy, take the gauntlet, 9000 guys whip him, the honorable thing to do, please shoot me in the head, all the skin stripped from his back but he’s fine, it’d have to be a cartoon, too horrific otherwise, the cartoon version of this, hard cuts in comics, in French, it is cartoonish, there’s no talking animals, unbelievably fun and funny, he’s taking the piss, there’s nothing he doesn’t make fun of, tied down, he killed the Jesuit and proves that, a juncture, ridiculous, The Mission (1986), Black Robe (1991), continuous rape scenes, not being able to ride on horses very well, the juxtaposition, sold into slavery, stabbed open, that Monty Python sketch [the Four Yorkshiremen sketch], Deep Space 9, Bajor needs the energy, tamed earth, fingernails to plow, humour is the best solution to almost all problems, share that horror story, it makes you feel better, God did his best, when kittens get crushed, no help at all, I loved that kitten, the kitten’s mom, isn’t it hilarious, enough of a consolation, tell each other our horror stories and laugh about it, on a list of books to read, an internet friend, school is about reverence, an irreverent book, some fancy king, you’re not allowed to make fun of that guy, a particular heresy, the devil has creative powers in the world, in contrast, the Devil’s at work, the theory that Solomon Kane is insane, he commits genocide against vampires, The Moon Of Skulls, Red Shadows, demonic things, or vampires, crazed black people, their unholy idol, King Solomon, famous as a judge, and Cain is the killer, his own brother, condemned to walk the earth, the right hand of God, the normal reading, the subversive reading, deluded, a more fun reading, how interested Howard was in Cain, an alliance with a JuJu man, a Puritan in fact, by the devil’s active work in the world, that’s actually good actually, earthquakes are good actually, there’s an earthquake in this story, Lisbon gets earthquaked, make a meal, really good at burning people, without a philosopher to give him guidance, he picks up Martin, Jesse doesn’t describe to ideologies, are you sure about that?, is that an ideology?, more obligation to go along, basic team human behavior, tie yourself to the mast of a sinking ship, a huge mistake, the comparison is almost perfect, both abstractions and connectable, an up and down, trying to appease an idea of god by burning somebody at the state, punished by an earthquake, a good thing to do, the exact opposite happens, either god making a joke of it, the god of this book is Voltaire, a planet spanning book, Europe and South America, a cross section of travel, we gotta talk about El Dorado, jewels on the ground, have a meal, pay with pebbles, buildings made out of gold, they leave with sheep full of diamonds, spends that money continously, 10,000 peasters, 20,000 peasters!, nothing bad seems to happen there, how come the whole earth isn’t like that, engaging with Utopia, no accounting for taste, philosophy of optimism, what Thomas More is grappling with, internal themes, conversations, needs to join the court of a king, should we bow, should we scrape, should we lick the dust, go hug him, this is an anti-king, the live action version get Jeff Bridges wearing the bathrobe, couldn’t we all get along better?, making fun of Utopia, wouldn’t it better if we could be richer than other people, no need unmet, his quest, his slave, Cacombo, the native, why people buy expensive stuff, lord it over other people, I paid full price, the badge of the product, overpriced handbag, she wants to be upper-class, not wanting to be inferior, lording it over that girl at school, funny funny stuff, not a funny book, stuff written in the 20th century, time creates a barrier between us and our ancestors, the world we live in, the people are the same, same kinds of foibles and personality defects, the systems are different, shownoting The Aeneid, the story of the founding of Rome to fit within the mythology of the founding of Rome, a piece of propaganda for the Romans, figuring out the audience, see what these symbols mean, their religion is more leagalistic, a person 2000 years ago reading this book, hone in on it, glimmers, this book feels pretty modern, lots of kings, no electricity, more like Plato, more like Play-Doh?, not a novel exactly, a modern novel (except it is much shorter), more of that please, not Thomas More please, concise, to the point, the chapters are short, things happen immediately, cut some of the adventures out, the stories are pretty short, a series of unfortunate events, the beginning of the intro by Littel, 1759, in ridicule of the notion, the world has been a gayer place, written in 3 days, like the number 40, a magic number, not the right date, he’s right but not in the details, Lovecraft is channeling a certain mode in certain stories, every real person is a richer character than any fictional character, one named wonders, volt is electricity, he’s shocking, he’s playing a game, jokeism?, horrible tweet, Max Blumenthal from the Grayzone, they learned it from these guys, a horrible truth, put that star of David, they learned it from, Nakba, Holocaust, burnt sacrifice, the catastrophe, this ideal world, you can see why the argument make sense walking out of the Holocaust, built to help support the creation of Israel, settler colonialism, you can laugh, you’re crying, are you Joker?, the Joker, feels everything, wants to lash out violently, recent Joker movies, people who humiliated him, he’s laughing, in the second Nakba, Taxi Driver (1976), this baggage, DC Comics universe, salience, a morbid symptom, laugh or cry, not prescriptive, take this Candide and call me in the morning, that’s why we share it, busy lifting, doing more than cultivating your own garden, gardening tips, lifting videos on instagram, lifting bins of potatoes, sculpting, I got books to read, challenging yourself, interject, into the depths, avoid the analysis, J.R.R. Tolkien, the emotional effect of the story, have a garden, he does get a little farm, they’re all coming together, a bunch of diamonds hidden in somebody’s pocket, I think I still want to marry her, sell him back into slavery, and they’re bored, burn the garden down just to get his way, Candide is punished, he doesn’t like her personality, he doesn’t like her looks, good at baking desserts, Colony by Philip K. Dick, so bad at writing military stuff, goes into the bathroom for a shower, the towel tries to kill him, comparing notes, “I trusted the rug completely”, rugs all the way down, stable in the new meta, that’s true for us too, we learn to wiggle our legs and arms, runaround and grab cookies, why am I using this walker?, who I am again?, nobody gets out of this alive, the way to approach it, slavery is bad, let’s sell him into slavery, seems objectively more dangerous than ours, even with its problems Europe is more stable, we have other problems, he was right, laughter is the solution, not trusting anything, have a good laugh over it, is that an ism?, probably, you have an ideology, I like this, it’s not manicheanism, what is it?, lying is bad, first strategy, what is my ideology if I haven’t spelled it out, cosmicism, a follower of Jesseism, “there is no recognizable divine presence, such as a god, in the universe, and that humans are particularly insignificant in the larger scheme of intergalactic existence”, that’s fun, don’t worry about it, you’re nothing but a mote of dust in the beam of a sun with a short lifespan, does it require, ideology: define, “a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy”, against copyright, it’s used as a censoring tool, a free speech absolutist, give em 10 years if they want, why not?, making it infinite, reasonablism?, eclectic, between Jesse and Jesse, do dogs have ideologies, they like bones, a set of behaviors, bring animals into a conversation, we are talking weird chimps, dogs don’t have policy, a special and rare and precious person, a very strange lady, a nice person too, strong will, not good when you are a little kid and have no defenses, tricks and techniques, an anti-ideology, ideologies make you week by outsourcing, not wanting to be weak, I like being effete, do you have the power to be as weak as a baby, putting on diapers, a weak colon, if you have a fetish, you wanna be a weak baby seems insane, weak like an infant, we all start off as infants who are weak, a newborn child, protected from insects, it’s mind is innocent, weakness and strength together, being obsessed with not being weak, lifting seems kinda silly, the only what is happiness, for a bear, rubbin against trees, what is happiness for a human?, ships or airplanes or tacos, doing intellectual works, writing poems, the real place where strength is needed, in the intellectual realm vs. lifting crates, quit the gym, new popular fads, all sailor related, pulling ropes and flipping big tires, get stuff off the ship, these are not sailors, sit for 8 hours, just observing, what kinda car they’re driving, they wanna be buff, skin salons and teeth whitening and nail salons, not a lot of personality improvement stores, a philosopher who gives you good argument, that’s why you got to Socrates, you don’t want to be mentally weak, that would hurt you, Paul in the New Testament, being spiritually strong vs. being physically strong, criticizing the use of physical strength, the psychological and intellectual training, the name Plato, broad or wide, short, he looks like a plate, he’s wider than he is tall, he’s a wrestler, wide in his variety of thought, a soldier wrestler, that was his nickname, I’ll wrestle you actually, bro, what is Plato’s real name, Aristocles, slave, time to work on your body and your mind, wrestle at symposia, where everything happened, some CBC guy on BlueSky, obscure social media network, Stephen Quinn of CBC, those Convoy types, we’re not the 51st state, getting ready for Flag Day, the day they switched the flag, the Suez Crisis, “peacekeeping”, if you call soldiers peacekeepers, Lester B. Pearson, why does Australia have the same flag, and New Zealand, why do they all have the Union Jack, pretend they’re not part of the British empire, a distinct society, we’re just these friendly dudes, Canada’s third way is to be the bully’s best friend, take nukes on or Bomarc missiles, laugh at Canada, because the TV told you to, don’t listen to the TV or radio guy, everyday is Flag Day in the USA, Jesse is mentally strong, Candide can help you mentally strong, if they’re not a mental baby, re-readable for one, the chapters are really short, a few jokes per chapter, like an episode of Friends, the cast of Friends in the adaptation of Candide, Buenos Aires, Abraham and his wife Sarah, just my sister, their relationship as brother and sister, a Wikipedia, a pun referring to the female genitalia, they’re brought up in a castle together, Candide is the son of the sister of the baron, not fully quartered, missing one of his provenances, at the very least they’re cousins, the reason he was disabused he was hanging out with her, they were half-siblings, son of the baron from another mother, that would make him the heir, the bastard heir, avoid more incest, underreporting, some of the scenes are elided, they don’t say they ate her buttock (but that’s what happened to it), chased away from his uncle’s home, marauding soliders, a lot of what could be seen as anti-jew, did you finish your podcasting?, soon!, not offended by this Jew talk, more Jews to sell more diamonds, everybody is equally stupid and lame, a comedy of humanity, are they half-brother and sister legit?, quite reasonable, keep it in the family, keep the money, fucked up stuff, the philosopher is fine with it, the best of all possible incest, the worst of all possible incest?, the final question: who is the idiot?, who is the fool philosopher, Pangloss, we all murdered each other, it’s fine, he has to say he believes in it, clarified right at the end, is this truly the best of all possible worlds?, from Suriname to Bordeaux, the philosophical conversations, so much analysis and stories, the funniness, tend to your own garden, clean your room isn’t the end of the story, god you stink you really need a shower, smell yourself first, I wanna shave more, that beard looking real raggy, bro, in terms of nations too, what Canada should be saying to the United States, trying to fix what’s going on in Suriname, we’re not states, we’re individuals, clean your room, check your messages, email is a scam, the dollar, a podcast on The Declaration Of Independence, the Federalist Papers, it makes no sense, 51st through 63rd, does PEI get it’s own state?, potato wars, Greenland’s not getting a statehood, Panama wouldn’t get a statehood either, the Canal Zone, why we getting worked out about, covered in comic books and printer cartridges and toilet paper, thank you guys, a good story to read, makes you laugh and think.

The SFFaudio Podcast #852 – Jesse and Alex (Pulpcovers) talk about Beat To Quarters by C.S. Forester

Talked about on today’s show:
The Happy Return aka Beat To Quarters, more exciting sounding, the drum, red alert, double red alert, get to your stations, spoken in the book, in searching twitter, a conversation, Cirsova, C.S. Hornblower Books is hard science fiction, anything set in space is not science fiction, flawlessly longical, the Honor Harrington books, same initials, same idea, career arc, broadsides in space, he crafted his science fiction technology to require broadsides in space, Star Trek was modeled after Horatio Hornblower, Picard’s character research, the tight-ass personality, badly reminded, a Hornblower scene on holodeck, when they did it on the show, recreation, sex fantasies, Worf’s going there to get stabbed, the Sherlock Holmes investigations, they’re doing their own recreation, trying to get your boss and the guy who does the photocopying to play your D&D, this works as a book, read this as a kid, always loved, a certain amount of wishfulfilment for the author, not a Mary Sue, kind of a jerk, see me being a great captain, very novel, the Horatio Hornblower tv series, you can’t do interior stuff in TV and movies, voice over narration, have somebody tell you what Conan’s feelings are, Subotai, almost completely through the eyes of Hornblower, the careful crafting of a first time author, intended to be a book series?, an established writer, brought to Hollywood to write a pirate movie, Hornblow and Bush, Captain Blood (1935), Errol Flynn, hounded by the prospect, hopped a freighter, voyage with this woman, a Wellsley, her name was Barbara, falling in love, an unfaithful womanizer, a guy who delivers the meals, lends itself to series, the romance, almost doesn’t fit, it’s fun, Sharpe is a response to Hornblower, Hornblower on land, comedic fat guy, a wagonmaster general, Baron Harkonnen, the same actor doing essentially the same role, a fat diplomat bad at his job, Ian McNeice, the main guy who’s awesome, men he has to convince, everybody think’s he’s great, seems like very very Mary Sue, counterbalanced, going bald, so obsessed with his own image, he refuses to talk to anybody, hm hmm, the narrator does a lot of hm hmmming, the 1951 adaptation, almost the entire novel, 2 other books, very faithful, the interiority, the officers betting, are we gonna die before we find shore?, the fawning, do the same job, C.S. Forester worked on the ship, a very Hollywood thing, the female servant some generic south american brown skinned person, so much shoepolish, El Supremo, so cartoonish, Aubrey–Maturin, Master And Commander Far Side Of The World (2003), first exposure to audiobooks, a lot of sitting, poetry, the double meaning of words, Jesse’s favourite joke, I was impressed by the British Navy’s recruiting methods, works both ways, very stupid, institutions being very bad, hospitals, they’re everywhere, they turn the people they work in them into soulless drudges, doing their best within the system, an impressed sailor, volunteers as well, a bigger part of the navy than it really was, when there’s no war there’s not a lot of impressment, dockyard, the rum ration, an institutionalized way of controlling people through drugs, stories from the 1950s, alcohol usage, excited about getting the rum, Pervitin, amphetamines, single seater aircraft, they don’t issue it to for you every day, SS and tanks, Robert Shaw, dye job, Battle Of The Bulge (1965), From Russia With Love (1963), keep pushing those tanks, worked against the French, institutions like prisons or mental hospitals, old-folks homes, during COVID, Ontario, getting uppity, drugged them, keep em calm, keep em under control, a certain feeling, part of your pay, not enough to get drunk on, double rations, a nice buzz, horrible work, a lot of pain, a miserable job, making people into cogs, the best example of that in a positive sense, in the next book, drilled and perfect, an incredibly well honed crew, prisoners and landsmen, kidnapping a bunch of guys, amateurs, weeks whipping them into shape, to be able to run up the mast, a lot of Hornblower is forming a mentality in the men, that image is represented, walk the deck, make sure they see him, keep that pot-belly down, Gregory Peck, by special arrangement, in their stable, these guys are like impressed sailors, under contract, thanks to Warner Brothers for giving us to this movie, Sony owns some of Marvel, if we wanna have the Spider-Man, just the character, TV shows, ER for all those year, a Michael Crichton show, Remington Steele, to be Bond, prevented him from being Bond for a while, Tom Selleck didn’t get Indiana Jones because, The High Road To China (1983), opens with flogging, starts the same way, to blame, Mr Bush, do you know why I’m flogging this man?, he was fighting, sir, more careful about what you say, that leadership, that aura, a few times, a lot more needing to show, the movie stops right after they blow up the other ship, our ship in rags, a cut, shipshape, the island, careening, unnecessary, why is it in there?, he has to be a complete man, fell in love with, writing about what you know, having him married, Wellesley, wife is dead, a very happy ending, a new family, someone else’s baby, widower and widow, the cheating we anticipate is made all fair, bigger ship of the line, his boss the admiral, they get married right away, I guess she really didn’t love me, he resents his own wife, lost two kids to smallpox, an act of parliament, remain this faithful husband, I hate her, back to war, captured by the French, his boss’ widow, they can now get married, a pure adaptation of the first three novels, a bit long for a film, fantastic, he’s not British is he?, Cary Grant, shove em in Europe and it is find, is this a science fiction novel?, no, but, are those science fiction novels if they’re built on this structure, a kind of technology, not future technology, understanding how these ships, work, oh!, I bet it is real, when they’re becalmed, he has the sailors wet down the sails, years at sea, sails are better, we have boat engines, you take down your sail, a little outboard, no need to rely on precision, there is one scene in the first Honor Harrington Jesse read, first time writer’s mistake, the captain looking in the mirror describing his shape to us, my hips are a little wide, especially prominent with female characters, I’m not happy with my double ds, many men have told me, too big of a tush, bad writing, oh really, it was brief, the men seeing him standing on deck, that double picture, it isn’t complete over the shoulder or into the mind of our hero, at two points in the book, Lady Barbara, down in the guts of the ship, Florence Nightingaling, Crimea, Sevastapol, physically demanding, this kind of nursing is not really women’s work, holding some hands and here’s your pill, explicitly excluded, pressing women to become nurses on ships, their better relationship to come, acting like a mother to one of these dying Scotsman, how to kiss him the way he wanted to be kissed by his mother, on the eyes and on the lips, he dies, that’s how the mom kissed him, acting as a mother, a good mother to his son, a similar scene, jumps out of the text, she and he are heavy petting, my poppet, in loving terms, except as a child, baby language, how people talk to each other, child honey, wife honey, very action packed, business oriented, the El Supremo incident, in the Pacific near Nicaragua and Panama, her packet being taken, already come around the horn, the return journey, asked Grok, the name of the island they fixed, the Isle of Pigs, Grok might be lying, there is an island in the right spot, in the Pacific that’s pretty obscure, on their way to the Horn, named after a pirate, a volcanic reef with a central body of water, on the wrong side, in the Coiba Island, Panama, sticking to the history, how many times did the Spanish change sides during the Napoleonic Wars, mostly from Sharpe, Spanish allies, conflict with other stuff, fictional, comparable, so cartoonish, much more like a Star Trek episode, on some planet, Hitler in hiding, Thanos action, to save food, The Conscience of the King, they don’t have discipline, a lot more guns, sunk, the local Indians recruited, except for the officers, very interesting, a background contempt, the negress, Hebe?, lock her up, she won’t stay away from the men, technically, she won’t stay away from a man either, she’s the fictional sister, a Red Sonja situation, invented a sister, just means God, worshiped as a god, if Kirk was in this situation, one of the guns that doesn’t go off, the money never comes up again, even just as ballast, the movie version of Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World (2003), pulling from at least two books, the colon in the title, should have had a sequel, beautiful in execution, everything that’s good in this book amped up, the model work is fine, the Peter Weir movie, the captain and his doctor, McCoy and Kirk, stop at the Galapagos and sort of pause, all the horror of the battles, the strategy is even more amped up, give you a sense, feel the weather, usually books are better, why people get addicted to reading the whole series, fun, interesting, the historical setting isn’t so faked, The Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, nothing matters, talking about Tortuga, just flags you can throw up to get you excited, a fantasy town, a fake culture they’ve slapped a real name on, outrageous behavior, verges on that, all of the British people watching, this guy is crazy and terrifying and weird, people being tortured, whipping is something we should try to avoid, his general/admiral, the cartoon of every dictator of every cartoon, a dark mirror of Hornblower, expect instant obedience, other books, a complete psychopath, a kinship, maybe I’m a complete psychopath, he has orders to follow, what will they think if I do this, lose my commission, go on half-pay, I have to follow my orders, that gold in the hold, that niggling feeling, not the perfect, what’s next?, it has all the goods you want, he pretends to be a whaler, trickery thing, in the Mediterranean, the Spanish French coast, you got three days, go cause some havok, switches flags real quick, trickery stuff, Star Trek, they’re on the frontier, going to places on the edge of explored space, space cops, Mudd’s Women, he’s a space cop, that’s illegal, the worst episodes of Star Trek, the only British ship in the entire Pacific, stolen maps, a 300 year old map, doing their business, they know the shore, this is not the safe and happy Caribbean, this is the far frontier, the aluetians, Fred Heimbaugh, Typee by Herman Melville, swim in, hiding out, Pacific Islanders, Tahitians!, you guys are in terrible shape, are they gonna taste us, bein nice, cut up by brambles, hungry and thirsty, it rains, they make a house in 10 minutes, food is abundant, a little bit of rain, life is easy on these islands, the opposite experience, the water has green things, skin’s opening up, Melville was gay, you look sexy, the women don’t worry about that unless you’re king, marry their sister, let’s go swimming, different sort of culture, cannibals on this island, over this mountain, point back over the other side of the island, the Pitcairn Island experience, Hawaii, hide until the ship leaves, they go to Tahiti, steal a bunch of women, burn the ships that nobody can leave, the Fletcher Christian story is a nightmare, a mutiny, the mutiny in the Bounty, 1789 – 1808, concerned they’re gonna jump ship, it interacts with the idea of El Supremeo, a mirror of Hornblower, no one can judge him, not even God can judge him, bound by his duty, reduced by looking in the mirror, how much balder he is, I wish I had a bow for my hair, unchecked, do whatever you want, Kirk seems to violate orders all the time, bound by the organization, specific orders, loyalty to the king, never gets punished for it, they throw him in the briar patch, a recapitulation of the Nomad space probe episode, gee whizz, very psychedelic, every year in the background, while you’re not paying attention, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) is getting better and better, The Wrath Of Khan, the space battle, also has Genesis, Star Trek VI is even moreso, he killed his son, he hates Kahn, it’s not personal, on a mission, prevent a war, a big space battle, the audience hates this guy, prevent that, Christopher Plummer, in the original klingon, I hate klingons, Star Trek IV, go back in time get some whales, back to the future, admiral kirk we’re demoting you to captain, solid ending, very bad all comedy Star Trek V, what does god need with a spaceship, product placement for marshmallows, with the nebula, clouds, comin out of a fog bank, coming out of a shoal, what the spanish ship is doing, whist, a rubber, Phileas Fogg, Around The World In 80 Days, the raid, take the ship, very cartoony in space, spock says he’s thinking two dimensionally, we think 3 dimensionally because we live in space, why Cirsova is right, they’re both right side up, the invisible ocean of ether, assembling for fleet battles, only when they’re sinking, listing to port, the horizon in space, the Constitution with Decker, planet killer [The Doomsday Machine], scratches a similar itch, a thesis, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and F&SF, a set of premises, these are the things that are possible, Will Emmons, another nautical guy, L. Ron Hubbard story, they’re not really science fiction stories because none of the premises he work for matter, mass to fuel, there is no wind that can suddenly save you, tides are super-goddamn predictable, otherwise your ship will sink, measuring the bottom, the tide situation, that stuff is very science fictional, the clocks, the solution being clocks, not the way we do it now, it’s all about clocks still, the difference between the two clocks, it tells us stuff, it’s science fiction in the sense that it plays by a certain set of rules, use them as weapons, makes this book worthy, ships and boats, he’s taught me, just research?, his first wife had a great uncle British naval captain, autobiographies of himself, the captain, manual of seamanship volume 1, look everything up as we need it, he’s studying for his lieutenant’s exams, a scenario like the Kobayashi Maru, dismasted, an attack outside, superheroic, commissioned lieutenant, about to fail, Kirk cheated on his exam, a test of character, TNG, some girl gives him help, leave one of these aliens behind, it was all a simulation on the holodeck, makes you grow as a man, all stolen from this, boosted so much, 20 of those, they’re chunky, this book was 7 hours, the next book in the series, Captain Horatio Hornblower, back to England, he’s rich, prizes, a son, Commodore Hornblower, invasion of Russia, fun, not as good as the first block of book, how series work, Killers Are My Meat by Stephen Marlowe, farmer, lady wants to ride a horse, disposive of their character, in certain genres, historical war novels, there was another battle, the war kept going, on the far side of the world for it, the French don’t show up in this book at all, an interesting setting, how the Sharpe series, Sharpe’s Tiger, Sean Bean, old retired guy, a weird phenomena, a new Dexter tv show, based on a novel, when the show becomes more popular than the original novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, a post-one, the voiceover, recast everybody to play younger versions, James Remar is the father figure, taught him the code, you’ve got a dark passenger inside you son, the guy from Heathers (1988), Christian Slater, impressions, as close as possible, muppets and then muppet babies, Dexter with Muppet Babies, Miami Vice with an 18 year old Crockett, we don’t want old Sean Bean, old Harrison Ford, that’s all they’ll give us, still uncanny CGI deaging, a flashback, digitally deaged, fuckn move on, wrong accent, the historical setting, the weird deep, thugees, the second Indiana Jones movie, the Sankara Stones, it’s quite complicated, Kali is not all evil, most contemporary media is content with broadsides in space, war story with a historical setting, Overlord (2018), that’s not how it was, at least Quentin Tarantino holds it for the end of the film, attention to historical detail is superimportant, space magic, the original tweet, three year journey, why is it called The Happy Return?, something he’s returning from, reason to be returning, didn’t get the girl in real life, she didn’t die?, the Barbara from the boat, he’s kind of a jerk, not a super-heroic character, a lot of self-doubt, overcome self-doubt, his self-doubt drives him to do stupid things to a lot of people, good at math, cheats on both of his wives, a little bit of a terrible person, if I don’t do it it will look bad for me, let things happen to people, socially awkward, undermine my dignity as a captain, sold on this book in the battle, takes so long, the way it accelerates, let’s see what we can do here, the bodies start piling up, dropping fake wood on top of people, my midshipman, where’s his head, a powderboy turned into red mist, obliterated by a cannon ball, super-humanitarian, not allowed, there’s no way to do it, parodic, historical examples, everybody on the Island is named Christian, a contest for who’s going to be in charge of this harem, pretty fuckin hardcore, disciplinary captain, the recapitulation, well plotted book, a big success, in the canon of things people hear about, Greyhound (2020), Tom Hanks, theaters were closed, sold it to Apple, worthy of attention, always like that in his films, a big anti-fan of Castaway (2000), box of chocolates movie, extremely boomer, fan service for everybody, Zelig (1983), Woody Allen, a forgotten piece of history, the evil it is showing into a Hallmark card, Saving Private Ryan (1998), the D-Day opening, trying to convince this team of guys, some dude, his brothers are dead, fake, why is this worth it?, they didn’t do that, they let 8 brothers die on a ship, they changed the law, all 5 Sullivan brothers died, all stuck on the same ship, dropping into Normandy, Matt Damon, I gotta fight this battle, fight with him to protect him, Ryan gets home, cuts to old man Ryan at the cemetery, these guys all died to save me, the Titanic, that’s why Jesse rejected it, The Good Shepherd, sounds weirdly religious, one of those Christian movies, a war movie, Fury (2014), the anti-Saving Private Ryan, the opposite of sentimental, sentimental war movies, The Four Feathers (2002), Heath Ledger, 4 movie versions, a good story every time, Chinese Gordon era Sudan, a very unfamiliar setting, not well explored, the Great Game is happening, central Asia, what is now Pakistan, Kim by Rudyard Kipling, where does it fit in the chronology, the Crimean War, the Boer Wars, filling in those details through history, start researching the very small details, using chatgpt, all about crafting question, you have studied international relations, a ten point plan for peace in Palestine and Israel, you’re gonna have to lie, the two state solution, who was the badguy in WWII in WWII one sentence answer, now who is the badguy in the Gaza-Israeli conflict, it’s really complicated, the clear picture from the perspective in history, the much easier and cleaner, details smoothed over, the victors are telling the story, I can’t believe you said that, everyone involved in dead, the Huns invaded that was bad, the basic way of going into any question, you wanna buy a stove, that guy’s gonna try to sell you a stove you don’t need, Amazon, the first step, a hot topic in the news right now, we can learn that way as the first step, don’t do that because it is bad, a good book, not a bad book, despite the mirror scene, in the first of a lot of books, that period uncaring sloppiness, the sensitivity of your descriptors, we’ll fix this by not having her represented at all, more colour, literally, the casual racism, anti-Spanish, yep, she’s black, kinda slutty, these assholes, so sloppy, so arrogant, predictable too, while that ship is approaching, Suprize!, the Lydia is not much of a name, the Pluto, the Sutherland, just a name, the Terror, Pellew is mentioned, the Indefatigable, Dreadnought, the Victory, The Four Feathers by A.E.W. Mason, collaborative, good old books, Ben-Hur, a 24 hour book, a big book, looking forward to it, a really good story, how many film versions?, a silent, the Charlton Heston, an early 2000s, a tv miniseries, see you on the internet.

The SFFaudio Podcast #852 – AUDIOBOOK/READALONG: The Hate Disease by Murray Leinster and The Rat Racket by David H. Keller

The SFFaudio Podcast #852 – The Hate Disease by Murray Leinster (2 hours 1 minute) read by Gregg Margarite and The Rat Racket by David H. Keller (35 minutes) read by Robert Griffin. These are followed by a discussion of both. Participants in the discussion include Jesse, Will Emmons and Terence Blake.

Talked about on today’s show:
Terry’s back!, The Hate Disease by Murray Leinster and The Rat Racket by David H. Keller, longer than it needs to be, judge the two stories, science fiction, crappy science fiction, neither was terrible, as you should, a paradox, looks like what Terry considers to be the formula for science fiction, take an idea and literalize it, physicalize it, resymbolize at the end to draw a moral, The Pied Piper Of Hamelin, a mob or racketing technique, psychological phenomena, Gaia striking back, very similar, one comes across as a science fiction story, in Weird Tales, weird fiction, Keller is more of a science fiction guy, Amazing Stories, 1931, the fantasy domain, the very last sentence, all he wanted to do was get rid of the rats, he’s a cat!, whenever I talk about it my voice becomes squeaky, the science fiction mode, the setting, contemporary setting, menace to society, non-Anglo Saxon force, urban science fantasy, genius for hitting at vital spots, in the context of Scott Miller’s recording, racketeering, if you look at it closely, doesn’t seem to, The Minions Of Midas by Jack London, bought the premise from Sinclair Lewis, perhaps they’re all the same premise, outside threatening force threatens capitalists, letters slipped to a local billionaire, those who are sending the messages, kill some unrelated person, find some blacksmith, until he pays the money, we never meet The Minions Of Midas, this is necessary in this period of time, a certain amount of capital, require $20 million dollars, redistribute the wealth, resolves itself, he’s tackling essentially the same problem, racketeering was a real thing, the technology is cities and telegrams and being anonymous, email is incredibly anonymous, never not monitored, free email accounts, a cybercafe, a burner yahoo email, telegrams vs. emails, Jack London’s point is much more amazing, what if that Pied Piper story was real, takes a long time in their setup, we like Murgatroyd and coffee, the mystery that’s going on, a little boring, it doesn’t need to be that long, the setup at the end is pretty stupid, the comeuppance, James Bond, A View To A Kill, the son of genetic engineering, blow up silicon valley, microchip company’s profits, falls out of the sky, the Med Ship story, a problem of the week story, symbolically it’s very interesting, the doctor running the planet, the chief minister of the planet, Dr Lett, a bloodletting, just let it happen, he deserves a presidential pardon, the solution, getting some woodsmoke in their lungs, sounds stupid, maybe this is a lot smarter, the ecosystem setup, no reliable native life forms, humans expanding forever, Malthusianism, we can expand forever into infinite galaxies, rats have been known to do that, Malthus, rats and rabbits multiplying past endurance, other molecules, don’t feel ripped off, not a make work project, the Amish, they’re farmy, cheap farmland, a story about Mennonites, met Mennonites, a bigger diaspora of them, all about vertical integration, repairable by themselves, they can fix carts, a religious prohibition, don’t buy phones from Apple, an interesting sentence, Hutterite children, protected from asthma, an associated citation, more in contact with farm animals as a child, associated theories, being too sterile, handwashing using alcohol with perfume, hand sanitizer, more likely to get warts, other problems, dry skin, a similar contention with lip balm, lip balm scientists, balm is medicine for skin, how The Hate Disease solved the mystery it setup up, a powerful idea for the time, checks and balances on the molecular level, they’re in Overdrive, an alien pet, drinking coffee, outlandish space opera drinking tea (in modern science fiction), same symbolic register, cozy and homey, into electricity so much, a gas fireplace, some apartments do not come with fake fireplace and an actual fire, heat register, underfloor heating, cold in the winter, fire is the solution, rural Kentucky, a country merchant, if you were a farmer, hang out around the pot-bellied stove, decorum, have to be a gentleman, farm animals and fire, American science fiction, a parochial literature, born and died in Virginia, went for a drive, last summer, be near farm animals, a petting zoo, not intensely popular, recreation for young people, a “carnival”, a rollercoaster, thrill rides, you really do want to pet a donkey, confined to cats and dogs and maybe a parakeet, you wanna hang out around cattle, and sheep, donkeys are cool, kept donkeys, spending time with the donkeys, different personalities and capabilities and interests, playing some game on his laptop, can I go feed the chickens?, something that people want to do, more and more disconnected by technological improvements, a deprivation, concentration of capital, the park vs. the woods, they’re bears in their, chaotic neutral bears, brown bears, grizzly bears, Central Park in New York, managed wildlife, swimming to an island, you’ve had the experience of getting a leech on your leg, water and air, everything else is imported, they forget to import the really important things, safteyism, hygienic, technological, Tallien, talion, Gaia, the planet fights back, a character from history, Jean Talion, the Reign of Terror, don’t communicate with the other, waiting for Dr. Fauci, some special med guy, a special injection, ground up worms, the toxin, a good mediation, The Strain, good aspects, this is Dracula, other vampires, derivative, The Walking Dead, the fear of infection, misleading as a title, they hate normal people, because they’re not like them, for eating worms, once you adopt a certain code of behavior for yourself, if you become vegan, the spreading of it, Terry was one for a while, a vegetarian, many years, more than 7 years, don’t violently attack you, carnivores, something so contemptible within yourself, being the only one, an evil act, you’re in the Israeli army, you gotta make him do it too, otherwise, go back to normal functioning, you can’t live with yourself, one variant, Wilhelm Reich, crazy follower of Freud, spread like a plague, jumped the shark, freudo-marxist, bodyarmour, emotional plague, quite useful, funny, the thing that’s so bad, people eat weird gross, fermented shark, durian, we eat with out brain, our taste is reworked by our brain, nobody likes coffee on their first sip, thinking of Will as the little monkey guy, more subject to cute, Will is much cuter, subject to cute, interacting with a cat, you build up a tolerance to their cuteness, a smellaphoto, coffee beans soaked in urine, contemporary reference, modelling Will, parts of Jesse in parts of Will, medical doctor on a spaceship with his space monkey, aping the behaviors, that’s fun, a Margaret St. Clair story, Meem, the two transmissions, a false story about what’s happening, some clues, the chase sequence, fine, grid operator, becoming, considering killing himself, Murray Leinster in the role, Murgatroyd saves the day, playing with the gun, the wooden floorboards of the spaceship, breaks up a wooden chair, the health systems, they’re both cured, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, pisses on the palace, burns their city down to save the people, thank me later, casualties of this fire, for the good, a trolley problem ignored, presumably the houses have safety systems, ruined record collections, space insurance for their space houses burning down, an old fashioned science fiction story, 1963, in Analog, pretty good, what do we think about Doctor Keller?, mixed reviews, its idea is small and the story is big, show the problem growing, the solution is not satisfactory, thoughroughly impressed by The Hate Disease, be dirty to be healthy, this other direction, male vs. female, there’s no girls in The Hate Disease, the opposite of feminist, so called typical male qualities, the little boy falls down, the dad says walk it off, the mom says oh dearie, I hate girls!, kisses it better, you rest up now, autobiography, when a bitch gives birth, licks the puppies clean, make the puppies poo and pee, not sort of normal dinner table conversation, facts, covered in filth, as a mother, the same is true of your grandma, what Jesse’s doing at your grandma’s house, attentive to dirt on skin, the cleanliness and making things sterile is a good instinct, the rub some dirt on it, it can go too far, the meeting of the two genders, they were effeminate, like Jurassic Park, nature found a way, an effeminate man, a little bit of a reach, maps to Jesse brain, females don’t exist in the future or the 1930s, The Last Woman by Thomas S. Gardner, mankind has evolved beyond the need for women, 1932, growing people in a factory, they accidentally make a woman, the reverse of this, very silly, the execution is very silly, from Wonder Stories, a silly time in science fiction, the Campbell Era, Kuttner and Del Rey, The Cranberries song, blessed by not being cursed by music, a good feel of The Cranberries, contemporary-ish, how those Irish go, a nice fruit, more Murray Leinster, The Mad Planet, The Last Spaceship, just read the first part, The Disciplinary Circuit, his best girl, earlier, lots of Leinsters, he had a long career, newspaperman, Will F. Jenkins, Snappy Stories, Breezy Stories, Argosy, romance under a woman’s name, a writing machine, 1896-1975, First Contact, Exploration Team, best novelette, Ben Tucker, a very good narrator, a fixup, details, the most interesting propaganda show, Landman, Taylor Sheridan, he was in Veronica Mars, actor to producer show writer, this one is for the oil companies, why oils is reality, why wind is not gonna work, it’s all true, but there’s no counterarguments, kinda refreshing, competently delivered, a Paramount show, oil extraction, Billy Bob Thornton, 24 was a huge show, the last gasp of regular broadcast television, Lost has no purpose, in sympatico with the Bush torture program, weapons of mass destruction, the plot every year, Keifer Sutherland was torturing people, they all were bad, he under his real name, 4th novel, 3rd book, if it was under another fake name, Professor blah blah blah, tricky at base, a copy of the paperback, just like what he did with The Andromeda Strain, stuff on the copyright page, footnotes everywhere, verisimilitude, a document dump, subversion, see what the score is, a more difficult time, shit information, the answer you would have got 15 years ago, some terrible reddit thread, ai summary of the whole thing, full of fake citations anyway, tripped up, the afterwords, an abridged audiobook, the movie, the dwarves, it wasn’t that good, the scenery was British Columbia, we got trees they got trees, fairly good adaptation, well regarded, late at night, sent late, Antonio Banderas still sounded like he was from spain, what’s with the no beard, Omar Sharif, champion bridge player, Lawrence Of Arabia (1964), his last film, learning the language, John McTiernan, slash, Michael Crichton came in to finish the movie, a very good director, Burt Reynolds tv movie, Norm Macdonald, they had to build a lot, a lot of horses, a lot of extras, rains, not a bunch of big names, European actors, our main warrior, the translator, the main viking for us, Buliwyf, Beowulf, the first 20 minutes, keeping it hidden, another Beowulf adaptation, pretty obscure, the Neil Gaiman cgi version, what if he was a coward the whole time, the sea-serpent scene, how he swam with the sea-serpent, the culture of bullshit, a great book, so ambitious, it’s really solid, the footnotes help somehow, in the middle of a battle scene, a little bit like The Princess Bride, very different from the film, the same structure, William Goldman, maybe we should do that one, it’s fantastic, part of it is the source material, a unicorn movie, really clever, a clever idea, a bet, did it on a bet, The Saga Of The Volsungs, deeply connected to Tolkien, Tolkien’s connection to Eaters Of The dead, at what point does it become complete fiction?, after chapter 4, an adaptation of Beowulf, as witness, historical figure, nicely implied, written down by this Arab dude, you need to tell my story, this wizard lady, lady of death, it can’t be 12 warriors, it has to be 13, Gandalf having the conversation, in The Hobbit, the reluctant participant, The Red Book Of Westmarch, There And Back Again, the same story, a mountain from also which comes a dragon, slay the thing and return home again, kinda funny, it is the premise of The Hobbit, all the rich hobbits were thieves, proud of being footpads, they’re old money, robber barons, they’re just Englishmen, hilarious, an Islamic scholar, drinking the mead, having sex with the slave women, he’s choking out a lady wanting to be sacrificed, wow!, not pulling his punches, very solid book, how good is that?, is this real? all the way through, that style of writing hurt sales, an after action report, setting up the frame, not a good writer, wrote it like an anthropologist, drier versions, giving himself a pat on the back, narrated by George Guidall, his vocal quality, very matter of fact, he had fallen in love, so I’m sitting there, super-hot wife, I enjoyed her for a while, all those locks on the door, an impotent rich man, he’s so matter of fact about it, that’s why they sent me out, the asides, the telling of stories, friend of the prophet’s, bearing his slippers, the miser, big long story, that man was cursed, a Guy de Maupassant story, out of embarrassment, gets fined again, completely destitute, he stole somebody’s shoes, our narrator thought it was a funny story and nobody laughed, cursed, you had to be there (in the culture), that culture’s clash, extended, Hrothgar and his son, faithfully done in the film, accidentally on purpose, beef, fight, quality of deception that they love, deception REALLY GOOD, quashes the growing rebellion, you send for a hero, questioning his loyalty, what did Buliwyf ultimately get out of all of this, and what else do you want?, the movie improved on, it’s good, the viking prayer, lo there, now I see all my deceased relatives, the line of my people back to the beginning, where the brave may live forever, he’s become acculturated, a very good adaptation of the book, any additions are structurally helpful, very streamlined, 6 and half hours, feasible, these books are designed to be picked up at a spinner rack at a drug store, typical Crichton heist novel, very ambitious, succeeds at every measure, the small big idea that it is, made his reputation, so well told, competence of the government agents and agency to solve a chemical mystery, he isn’t a faker, all my friends write novels for nanorimo, some weird idea that I have, an insatiable market for paperbacks, a new thing next week, The Venom Business, read Airframe and report back, Congo, The Great Train Robbery, terrific movie adaptation, funny, fast paced, clever, sexy, him showing off that he can do everything, a fake scholarship novel, not science fiction exactly, technothriller, more like a Robin Cook novel, his movie version of Coma by Robin Cook, Westworld, so solidly, characters, stop repeating yourself, Rendezvous With Rama, character and the idea, Arthur C. Clarke is not a normal dude, normal human relationships, ideas, Kim Stanley Robinson, Pacific Edge, this guy is clever, 2312, 900 pages, no plot, no characters, let me worldbuild, The Silmarillion, more plot, everybody wanted more Tolkien, great worldbuilding, novels, humour, very dry, a lot of writers, successful writers, cool ideas, some of them get awards, highly acclaimed books, this could be one third as long and be way better, he’s great at short stories, The City And The Stars is an amazing book, lean into the commercial success, a disaster set on the moon, A Fall Of Moondust, a terrible novel, The Nine Billion Names Of God, Crichton didn’t write a single short story, A Case Of Need, Dealing, a drug dealing novel, Congo, Bruce Campbell, after Jurassic Park, a date movie, everybody wanted everything from him, universally beloved, kind of a problem, everything is Jurassic Park, elevator pitch, the quintessentially example, Jurassic Park, The Meg, Sharknados, Rising Sun, 1992, Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes, Japanese businessmen are horny and probably bad, maybe too late in his career, one year after the book, 14 years old, moving into high school, he was a movie hit before Jurassic Park, Spielberg’s directing, get the kids going, shorts and boots, Sam Neil, Event Horizon (1997) is a movie, intense, how long is Congo?, chunky, King Solomon’s Mines, very King Solomon’s Mines, with lasers and monkeys, him engaging, writes books with poets as inspirations, big ambitions, gonna be interesting, white apes, intelligent monkeys, a little pulpy, a little longer, Sphere was weird, you can go wrong, Timeline, State Of Fear, weird ideas, talks a lot about science, The Terminal Man, MKUltra, tin foil hat, brain implants to control people, he’s really on it, whatever he’s writing, past Jurassic Park, what happened between 1980 and Sphere, no book for 7 years, in Hollywood doing tv shows, his Travels, sex with movie stars, every year after that there’s a new book, posthumous from there, one last year, with James Patterson, also not writing his own books, his fictional post-script, they’re neanderthals, has become less crazy, 1992, more than 30 years ago now, the state of neanderthal research, Robert J. Sawyer wrote a trilogy, homo sapiens are extinct, sexuality, their females going into heat, our hero describes the culture of the vikings, they are not pederasts, the culture where he’s coming from a pederastic culture, the Greeks, the relationship to females and slave females, marriage, is your wife faithful?, of course she isn’t, they’re your sons anyway, semi-reflected in the Scandinavian culture of today, a southern European thing, lock the women up, you wife may have a child from another man, something people wouldn’t have put in their book today, full of good detail, an adventure, action packed scenes subverted, capturing the alienness, a new york journalism student, basing it on a real document, carries that through, think differently, how influential Ibn Fadlan’s, rip off whole sections, handsome Hollywood actors, shows like Vikings, slavery among the Scandanavians, the worst slaveowners, most brutal, most casual, super-widespread, just kill them, get new ones in the spring, brutal, awful, some of that in here, complete casualness, raping the slaves, so good, choking out the sacrifice lady, she seemed clear in her mind, she was into it, that you’re into it to, god they’re weirdos, they don’t wash properly, the best sort of effect, a single player RPG, you in the final scene doing something horrible, really good writing, a very moral book, he grew into something better, what made it good, here’s this historical figure who really did travel from Baghdad into north country, meat into the story, suicide path, other female slaves, a question of consent, treatment of women, good for sex, procreation, and sacrifice, weird respect for women, treat em well, two female guards to prevent her from changing her mind, character growth, in fiction, the idea of progress, morally progress, technologically progress, from bronze swords to long swords, the Japanese katana is the highest form, the same job, chop or stab, the vorpal sword, light sabers, a cavalry saber, saber doesn’t mean what they do in Star Wars, all sorts of stupid stuff, progress is a mistake we impose on a set of circumstances, there’s change, and there’s continuity, people are not different, culture is slightly different, death cults, people remain the same, an illusion, we do this in story, stories should reveal character rather than show character growth, doing a lot lift, do you even lift, bro?, he isn’t as quick, trickiness and cleverness, shifty, you can change hands, your sinister hand, nobility, this other mode of being, being a tricky bastard, why Loki as a figure is interesting, his brother Thor, wrathful and kind of dumb, H. Rider Haggard’s Eric Brighteyes is a dimbulb, he’s a dimwit, strong and young, she’s playing him the whole book, a dimmy, 14?, he’s got so many good books, really good, a lot of really good books, he was supertall, standing next to Spielberg, 25 novels, Disclosure, 66 years old, older than Eric, born in 1942, he was writing paperback, put himself through medschool, CIA?, his memoir Travels, goes to Belize with his sister, almost dies, almost dead, this urge to have sex, not acceptable, connecting it to previous experiences, world traveler, the danger is these guys are gonna rob us, the physical circumstances, lives voraciously, a viking sort of idea, horny because you almost died, a biological perspective, pretty extraordinary, chakras or whatever, talking to a cactus, the cactus is talking back, sell everything, super-open and very hidden, as Doctors in everything except completion, mysteries to be solved through surgery, you don’t give them the other option, the show ER, long hours, cockiness, treat themselves as gods, that’s no way to be, a man who couldn’t be contained, Alec Baldwin movie, I am god, Malice (1993), The Bear The Edge (1997), Redbelt, David Mamet, House Of Games (1987), Tim Allen, Steven Segal, swordfighting movie, Conan The Barbarian (1982), cooperative play like in Wrestlemania, that’s fake, at dinner, Horatio Hornblower, Beat To Quarters, New Orleans, Phoenix, C.S. Forester, [lembas], healing energy.

The SFFaudio Podcast #849 – AUDIOBOOK/READALONG: Prize Ship by Philip K. Dick AND The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey

The SFFaudio Podcast #849 – Prize Ship by Philip K. Dick (42 minutes) and The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey (41 minutes). Both are read by Tommy Patrick Ryan. These are followed by a discussion of both. Participants in the discussion include Jesse, Will Emmons, and Tommy Patrick Ryan.

Talked about on today’s show:
1954, 1961, 42 minutes or so, one is far superior to the other, which is which?, Prize Ship is superior to The Ship Who Sang, largely similarish time frame, pairing them thematically, Mr. Spaceship, thematically, far superior, first time Anne McCaffrey, a trick story, not a particularly well executed one, he muted himself but doesn’t know, this wide of a gap, particularily phenomenal, a trick, some comments, Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels, never mentioned, Brobdingnag, Dragon Riders Of Pern, Eric’s book club with Tommy, okay, fun and interesting, themes, the Dick thing relied so heavily, the expanding universe, that gimmick is so thin, an interesting idea, naturally leads to sequels, leaves it open, the worldbuilding that she does, mentally good, physical deformities, these dudes are comin over, they go inside of her, try to charm her, passin out drinks, she signed off on this, that’s gross, being in love with him, a girl story, Philip K. Dick’s story is a peice of shit, way too long for the material, some other solar system, this one stupid moon, Ganymede, they don’t use cradle technology, horrible Ganymedeian emperor, so many characters, any distinction from each other, the Plutonians are Soviets or something, that’s on Philip K. Dick writing in his shit mode, time wasting stories, doesn’t put a foot wrong, leaves open the possibility of endless series, girl ideas, girl mindset, a houseparty inside of her, she sets her cap, she gets to have it every which way, she’s the girl in the wheelchair at the dance party, brain, brawn, a terrific story, also a little bit pretty, in sympathy, we probably agree, not the finest story you’ve ever read, the best McCaffrey story Jesse has ever read, what if this story were weirder or more upsetting, it should be upsetting, programming people, putting them in institutions, concerned citizens, step by step eliminates objections, increases the history, brain ship the third generation, Star Trek [The Next Generation] where Majel Barrett is the ship and Will Riker is her only crewman, girl fantasy romance in space, great at girl psychology, fetish weirdness, coyness with regard to sexuality, silly beyond 40 minutes, our primary brawn, he looks at her, being seen, whole bunch of titanium, he still looks at her, he doesn’t dance with her out of obligation, valid points, more comments about the Dick story, more to be critical of, better to shoot first on a strange planet, he fundamentally doesn’t understand military organization or business structures, when he fakes it he comes across as stupid, there’s greatness in the story idea, it’s a 4 second story, a joke story, a twist story, Gulliver’s Travels, junior year of college, of a regular curriculum, every planet and many moons, deep in the future, their own tech, an excuse to revisit the ideas that blue Philip K. Dick’s socks off when he was a kid, time travel not being really worth it, being silly, throw away characters, so long for the material, the guy who didn’t know the story, a fun brief discussion point, gone to the future, everything could be real, Wonderland, Oz, Middle Earth, Narnia, Neverland, today’s lexicon, maybe it’s not worth it, felt more dated, still out there, the story is dated by it’s dated references, when this is supposed to be, perhaps others, Erewhon, Pellucidar, all the the fantasy’s dreams, jum jum jum, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ hollow earth, going into it, tickled at the imagination, sorta fun, so referential, so meta in that way, way deep into the story, so much setup, so lame, the whole senator scene, boring, he’s terrible at that shit, so useless, did nothing for the story, the Ganymedean at the end, could have been half as long, one of these is a classic, the other one is absolutely forgetable, Return To Lilliput, something that is on his mind, boobs, direct references to The Odyssey, Strange Eden, childhood reading, work through this, social satire not science fiction or a true story, he can’t help himself, the joke is better, Prominent Author, the joke is really good, commuting, who the hell writes about commuting, multiple times, fucked by the robot at home, very fun, gotta commute, tiny little people, doesn’t report the hole, the joke is, slips of paper, not aliens from other planets, they’re the Israelites, he is god, Moses!, busy writing down the ten commandments, cribbing from the bible at work, a good joke, also this weird idea, what kind of idea is that, a result of technology, no such thing as commuting, transit time, your work can be hours away, a six hour drive to work, come back once a week, a second place in the Chicago area, relocate, a fundamental science fiction idea, the consequences of technological change, time travel is real rather than cradle technology, expanding universe isn’t just space between stars, the size of everything grows, he buries it, the title, buried by it’s own garbage, done as kind of a joke, vitriol, by having this discussion, the worst time travel story, pretty silly, it’s an idea, Robert J. Sawyer in a dinosaur novel, Shadow In Space by Philip Jose Farmer, any female characters?, liliputian female, not even a quivering look at her boobs, meat and potatoes make money mode, my beating heart, no emotions in this story, don’t care, things I should hate, Jesse hates characters and emotions, character makes you read big long series, Dragons Of Autumn Twilight, Dragons Of Winter Dawn, Dragons of Summer Festing, Time Of The Twins, reading for character, the death of Sturm Brightblade!, a way of tricking people into reading, how their stories go, the Dresden Files, Dragonlance, Drizt?, high literature, we literally form a relationship, we like them, Tanis Half-Elven, Wolverine, half-girlfriend, anti-Cyclops feelings, the X-Men has science fiction ideas sometimes, a bit of both, a bit of allegory, the junk story, the gem has problems, you want to see what happens next, the guy dies, that’s awesome, dumb, naive, the grandmother ship coming along, leads to the possibility, this federation, drug smugglers and vaccines, also The Cold Equations, a plague on Woden, just like Balto, a dog one, our noble brawn, so fucking girl psychology, the relationship between and ugly girl or a disabled girl, maybe she’s got pimples, kids exposed to thalidomide, We Didn’t Start The Fire, Jesse is very suspicious of music, things that Jesse should be worried about: institutions, corruption, abuse, is she being abused?, “power seek”, these brainships, total slaves, they have agency, how limited is that agency, later sequels, pick her person, it felt backwards, having a party inside of her, a gang rape [gang bang], a man who doesn’t suck, all as good as you can get, top 1 percent in everything, good at everything, they’re all Rikers, they’re not Barkleys and not Picards, fine starfleet officer, an exploration of the borderlines of the idea, a ship’s counselor, understand emotions, looks good in her outfit, her role is expanded when you have characters like Barkley, fucking up at work, expansive, read the whole series, the next story will be more of the same, and largely girl fantasy, all the men coming into her, a crew choosing party, courted like Jane Austen, the song by Rebecca Black called Friday, immensely inane, kick it in the back seat, that’s her life, zionists?, the disparity, her major problem is which seat should she sit in?, hilarious and endearing and stupid and anti-intellectual, almost asexual, the central question of the story, some level of agency is nice, Pride And Prejudice, just brooding, scary eyebrows, happy for Elizabeth, filthy rich, a bonus, take pity, he likes her for her, not for her money, that’s nice, themes in there, she’s the one who makes things happen in the home, she invites a man into her, they go out adventuring, planted on the ground giving advice, goes and talks to the nuns, we’re running out, runs back, they all follow Riker back into the ship, heroic efforts, a manly hero, it has everything, woman being virginal, woman being sexual, so perfect with regards using a science fiction idea, to explore female psychology, so good at it, is there a scene wasted here?, usally to give us a little information, to allay fears of abuse, institutions being very dangerous, separating kids from their families, either than our she’s going to be euthanized, pick up that ball and run with it, her other option, the Jedi in Star Wars, force sensitive, taken from their families, they can be good monks, in Judge Dredd, indoctrinated from age 5, a kind of priesthood or nunhood, saving this colony of nuns, this handsome man, parallels, jealous, only has eyes for her shell, the alternatives, the modern equivalent, put in the incinerator, a reality, taken away from your parents immediately, how the Spartan system works, out in barracks, murder a Helot, horrible disciplinary stuff, the British Public School system, brainships are female, the singing, initial attraction, her reputation, a girl in a wheelchair, a girl with a birthmark on her face, a girl with a limp, so girl psychology, it exceeds its premise, an excellent science fiction story, less luke war, the totality of the storyline, one of the joys of discussion, this does do a lot of stuff, reverse discrimination, she’s in charge, more examples, not desired, not into her for her looks, who and what they are, personality is important, physically deformed, an exterior body that’s powerful and capable, she’s the homunculus, a very Eric reading, a different kind of commuting, a pretty positive story, a female author, accomplished so well, artistic, she’s a person, not just a machine, makes her more fully round, she can paint the Last Supper on the head of a screw, and now the women are going to play the harpsichord, music, needlework, doemestic entertainment, business partners or whatever, the billiards room, a gathering at the piano, if you’re advertising for piano lessons, what sets this ship apart, she sings, music is one of the greatest things to exist, hostile, actively suspicious, it’s math in sound, what happens when people get patriotic, you shouldn’t get teary eyed at propaganda, music is fuckin dangerous, why the Puritains were worried about dancing, hymns, used to manipulate, why am I crying, I wanna get down on Friday, it shouldn’t be popular, Gagnam Style, a song about a guy who attracts girls, he’s your uncle, age and gender, older brother dances like this, he gets all the girls, translates from another language that we don’t understand, music is a direct line into people’s fuckin minds, the concern, they’re not all equal, try to get a millenial to watch a movie, Will’s seen 5 movies, try with a zoomer, obsessed with Star Wars, not all modes are equal, insidious inside of you, Mein Kampf, very few, into your ears whether you want it or not, a Burger King commercial, college sports, an earworm, Beethoven, Mozart, The Silmarillion, a joke, the opening, they make music, everything is vibration, Tolkien wasn’t a dumb man, all power has potential to be dangerous, when we make music, the source or the force, some would call God, music and yoga, more than church, about peace and stuff and understanding, use any too for good or evil, the knife that harms, toddlers are given nuclear weapons, undersea mountains, a power range, in law, noise violations, decibels or hours vs. content, physical contact is the point of assault, that demarcation, sound is everywhere, incumbent, upset at muzak in an elevator, brain activity, enjoying my audiobook, working in schools, special ed, have to put headphones, Jesse is weird and Will amped it up on purpose, Will is an agitator, not unprofitably, a key factor in human development, having heard that diatribe, we recognize the power of music, perfume, fresh bread not offense, laundry pods, but why?,no wasted characters, lots of interesting technology, psychology, what if Einstein’s theory implies this, also Lilliput, clearly they’re quite different, leaning towards Dick, the datedness, toxic masculinity, lack of women, patriarchy, not unitl Jennan comes along is she truly alive, apparently not interesting contributors, The Gun, doesn’t sound right, this is a classic science fiction story, dial down 2024 sensibilities, 2025, things have changed, [Project 2025], the only person who’s recorded those public domain stories, mostly bored, vibing, cringing, totally immersed in 1950s science fiction, had to turn in his first draft on this one, get canceled, in a very different light, not publishable in 2025, it would be independent and very popular, a tune up, it might be gay, Murderbot books, supposed to be really good, it’s awesome, character, Luke Burrage reviewing with Julianne, total Jesse hate, character based, relationship to humans, autistic relationship, book series, more more more character, Lord Of The Rings, Frodo’s going to off to the Grey Havens, oh no the story is over!, a little echo with Sam and his wife, I gotta read it again, that is a mistake, it doesn’t need sequels by other hands, several endings on it, The Scouring Of The Shire, longest epilogue, a great tramping, everything is opening up, this is depressing, debate about potatoes, what happened to Mr Sam’s frying pans, attention and relationship a reader has to the material, Murderbot is indulgence, how do we feel about Conan in this context, Conan vs. Howard, a space in which he can operate, forced to fit into a certain mode, with Dragonlance, become addictive, gather at a treehouse, they have food, two brothers, twins, warriors, gladiator, learn evil magic, fight the evil, oh, it’s epic, by book 30, am I really getting a lot of value out of this, Dragon Ball Z, Conan Doyle kept killing off Sherlock Holmes, that happens, people literally care, writing more to give people more, inevitably always happens, the fixup, that’s the first book, at least 7 books, enough already, not interesting at all, Siler, the German guy, Bassett was British, male lead, he’s Han Solo and Will Riker, a bard who’s handsome, everything a girl could loved, just like his father, the cowboy, the American, not well known for his great characters, The Wub is a great character, it’s Jesus, come to accept, non-superflouous, Instrumentality of Man, negative feedback, Player Of Games by Iain M. Banks, dangerous and insidious, the culture is like heaven, as a standalone it would be fine, anti-utopian societies, is this a utopian society?, the same premise every time, given you’re in heaven…, the edges of heaven, neat points, playing board games, video games, kids, 24 hours, their behavior afterward, what are you really getting done, fetch quests, 15 seasons of Supernatural, insightfully, “Jesse don’t you have any happy movies”, Paperback Romance (1994), disabled lady with a gimpy leg, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, admires her writing, a great movie, soft and sucky, if that is the range of your film wanting, brokenness inside of you, binging and other things, what is it for, how should we use it, how should we recognize what it is, many traps in the world, shared setting vs. series, the Ringworld books, the theory of series, diminishing returns, intellectual laziness, when sick, the ability to do the work, instead of going over to the machine, watch a couple John Carpenter movies, operating like that all the time, watch it again!, not just as a pacification, understanding and realization, somehow disabled, something comfortable, to stimulate and edify, to raise up, edify define, instruct or improve, when you’ve learned something, having the guy catch all your fish for you, good as a trilogy, gotten past the worldbuilding, The Empire Strikes Back, The Two Towers, how dense those middle parts are, they don’t want to have to learn it again, the prequels, the sequels, Rey and Finn, give me something new, not edifying, an excellent story, shown Tommy the light, take a dump in a bag and stamp literature on it, word rates, F&SF, a more literary snobby, actually produces good results, we don’t like your kind here, Boucher, by [19]61 he was gone, Robert P. Mills, quality wise it is excellent, they don’t have interior art generally, Astounding and Galaxy art, Virgil Finlay, a banana on the cover, a nebula and a galaxy and a banana, what the ship size is, the Millennium Falcon size, cooler looking, less knobby, light frigate sized, so much like the starship Enterprise, a landing gantry, female writer that Tommy’s mom likes, newer equipment, feedback, an entire book, any notes, the different accents, the interpretation an audiobook narrator brings to a story, Will is more open to dramatic readings than Jesse is, well done, is it appropriate for a man to do a story that’s so female focuses, Barbara Rosenblat, much more clunky, that’s the story, bounces around, there is no distinction between the characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the most notable character, closer and warmer always is nicer, a cold room, a bigger room, they mean the same thing, less echo more close, microphone based, room based, back off the microphone, snuggled into my microphone, get closer to the cardioid, dialing down the [gain], projection, tend to Levelate, just for volume, Levelator, levelation, when you look at a million LibriVox files, nice and snuggled, breaks all of the lows and all of the high, for volume control, raw files, too sick for too long, Will got his homework done, nice and short, a lot of audiobooks, Tommy’s stuff’s pretty good, awful Hegel audiobook, teach a man to fish for compliments, technical stuff, fish the pond out, theatrical experience, theater mode, theater voice, recording stories, one should do things, playing board games for money, how to stream games for money, you’re in your bedroom, a side hustle, as a performance for other people, a horror show, sing in the car, sharing something that has value, it’s not just fun, it’s edifying, Jesse’s conviction, some listeners that have similar experiences, saying similar, that’s enough, the superior man studies literature, it’s a simplified version of the world, that is enough, I can do these things, a chance to listen to it, put some headphones in, wash the dishes, do the laundry, next week is Eaters Of The Dead by Michael Crichton, The Jameson Satellite and Mellonta Tauta, Mr. Spaceship?, asking about utopias, Mack Reynolds, not his later novels, Border, Breed, Nor Birth, Mercenary, a strange new meaning, read by Mark Nelson, 23rd of February, probably Ben Tucker, Phil Chenevert, can I be late several minutes, much appreciated, always a pleasure, salient points, appreciate, mails it in, held him on a pedestal, may the Force be with you, so fucked up by illness on Vancouver Island, a great book: Project Pope, not exactly on Catholic matters, Lilith by George MacDonald as well, done for adults, people with lots of limbs, kinda about suicide, a new reality, very interesting, more Catholic redeption, The Magic City, Edith Nesbit, they meet a man she knew as a child, she is going to marry him, super-resentful, mom and sister is being taken away, the boy acts like a jerk, secretly he builds a city out of household objects, kinda like the DREAMLANDS, everything is magical, a fantasy of child creation, The LEGO Movie is very good, ip, Batman and Star Wars, childhood materials, Lord Business, he’s mad because his dad is always at work, creates a world and falls into it, redeeming, nice right, very charming, pastoral inside of a fake city, what food do they eat, there’s a prophecy, a visitor will comes, nice little nested story, what’s going on, reading a lot, gotta do that sometimes, making reviews and notes, ancient Chinese philosophy, worth understanding Confucius and Mencius, human nature as basically good, filial duties, an elder, and so sick, we have to consider that, in the Confucian framework, a stronger duty, equal universal love, snow melt?, safe inside, Haitian independence, what does this consist of?, ate food, strange and normal, honorary Germans?, every kind of person, weird conversations, a communist, comes across as very normal, into Chairman Gonzalo, the Peruvian Communist Party, a good time, Haitian soup, a savoury quality, pork, cabbage, the broth, squash, a tasty experience, spicy chicken pastries, blood pressure down, meat and meat associated products, lots of salt, crazy things we were told, salt’s fine, you need salt to live, why animals and humans lick it, not being productive, a very strange lady, 70 years old, highly disabled, huge knowledge network, hundreds of chickens and goose and 7 cattle, nature and nurture, a little genetics and little philosophy, being sick is frustrating and annoying, take vacations, why you trying to punish me, comb the beaches, explore them, map them, learn the lore, go fishing, 6 hour podcast to edit up tonight, get Jesse and Will talking, bad habits, a long show, The Journey Of Joenes, very good time, another human, good guy.

1910, read to me, talking about it on twitter, pretty amazing, working on my Dreamland role playing game, dreamland adjacent, Five Children And It, childhood library, didn’t have good art, really love it, Ruth Golding’s version, the audiobook will be up front, unless they skip to the end, not better known, Wizard Of Oz level, didn’t have 50 other books made after it, we start with the premise, a little boy who’s an orphan, his mother is his sister, he’s 10, one day they meet a man on the road, he offends in many small ways, determined to be mad at his sister-mom, introduced to the family of this widower, everything’s wrecked, very real, Isekai, portal world stories, annoying boys, jerks, he gets out of it, negotiates with the girl, it’s sweet, talking everything, to restate the whole premise, child protagonist, feels lonely and grumpy, honeymoon with her new husband, new step-sister, takes refuge in an elaborate city, toy soldiers, books, the nanny, what a mess, take all this apart, by moonlight, transformed, into the city, his sister pops in too, not just a magic city, the wikipedia synopsis, the magic world, a small part of this greater world, everything that he’s ever dreamed of or played with, other people are drawn into this world, reminded by the premise, The Lego Movie (2014), Lord Business, relationship between you your toy your world, bad relationship, through the course of the experience, avatar, a more positive relationship on the other end, really key, build something and the then play with it, couldn’t become the guy, being inside the buildings, building up a fantasy secondary world, The Sword Of Welleran by Lord Dunsany, another mode, just play, not just the story of a kid who builds a city, a new family being integrated together, emotional change, after they see the beautiful city, she shouldn’t tear this down, a coming together, wild imagination, The Dream-Quest Of Unknown Kadath, earlier modes of human behavior, past-toddler, a 2 year old and a 4 year old, superbaby, peekaboo, imaginative work, names for her toys, Setsee, literal names, the process, a mermaid named Seariel, every language was foreign, stodgy and literal, pretending to be things, a monster here, this is an ice cream shop, the floor is lava, his whole world and everything that he thought of, favourite line, for the second time, Philip the carpenter, a little progressive, idle dreamers, the people who build these toys, Mr Parent, how can you be here and at Amblehurst too, just a dream then, go through the dreams and come out on the otherside, the coolest concept, the most lame explanation, even in 1910, fairly silly, arbitrary, fetch quests, maybe written for serialization, no vegetables or fruits in this kingdom, pineapples are not considered fruits here, very profound, trippy, secondary world material, a cosmic feeling, the mystic sense, mysticism, drilling in the eight hours of day enough, contemporary politics, the laws in the Magic City, good laws and bad laws, Noah is also the judge, they’re convicted, put in prison, would you please escape, they exit the door, would you please escape, a task defeated, what the purpose of everybody’s job is, make beautiful laws, everyone should be nice to everyone else, Nesbit doesn’t delve deeply into this idea, SimCity, Civilization, your own philosophy, a peaceful city, a healthful city, chessboards and old books, will it be a kingdom?, crowned king and queen, this is a republic, please leave, play with the idea of what makes a building of a city beautiful and valuable, H.P. Lovecraft stories, the chalcedony and the thanes, impious leadership, very corrupt, how should they live there, gotta be conscious, the city is multi-ethnic, this person is brown, this person is Chinese, non-ethno state fantasy world, a reflection of the ideal, the boy builds it for escape, a very lonely life, wealthy enough to afford servants, play-friends, sister/mom playfriend, he’d previously done it, a practice of comfort, such a big grudge, so much investment he literally falls into it, Inferno by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, Larry Niven goes to Hell, reconstructing Dante’s Inferno from a hard science fiction point of view, how does the city work?, work out a history, meals made of cardboard, bowls for dessert, prophecies, make plot happen, while our hero has not been there, The Neverending Story, movie and book, the first half of the book, since you created it it has been here forever, module creation, set your players on a path, not hallucinate exactly, filibuster, once it has been said it is now fact, maybe the people don’t eat at all, fight the lions in the desert, the intent of the person killing them, so many great parts in this book, the hints of the political changes, Somnolentia, formerly Briskford, backtory, why are we changing the name, making the place better, healing exercise, you’ve got some trauma, talk it out, write it down, work it out, Halva?, more complex chess or go or Chinese checkers, before video games, before dungeons and dragons, toy shop, the Sears catalogue, Lando’s speeder, I can imagine it, you use what figures you have, why LEGO is so great, make your own toys, the guts to see though it, branded toys, an IP nightmare, make it generic, playing into the same, sloth vs. industry, something there, a slow person, very slow, sloth is a sin, what makes you suddenly creative, 17 different things going, on the phone, no creativity there, stress and things that gotta get checked off, today’s a slow day, early in the book, just because it’s raining outside that isn’t a day for lessons, punishment, much rather be playing, a day of laze-about, get out the pencil crayons, something starts to appear, the rule by the great sloth is something to be addressed, not working deep mines of anything, isn’t it interesting, impressed by the ending, the grand surprise, Julius Caesar to defeat the barbarians, imaginative stuff, everything is in the city, how they exit is interesting, they build their way out, they build their way in, the pretenderess, carried away with her own excitement, the Noah toy comes to life because of the tears, not a serious story, maybe it didn’t happen, The Fall (2006), artsy, listening to stories told by a stuntman, the story becomes darker, dark thoughts, helplessness and despair, all just a dream, oh please!, fantasy sequences, they don’t give you that wink, literal minded, establish that it’s “real”, pointing to it earlier, you go through dream through to reality, Ex Oblivione, chairs, horses, become one with everything that’s real, through the trauma of that plucking, as you grow and learn and experience, you recognize the things you once knew, dreams tell me about me and what’s going on in my world, if it has no consequence or value, the world is a dream, the Poe gloss on it, The Arabian Nights, literal mindedness, let me tell you another story, what’s the real?, equal weight as words on a page, we’re destablishing the reality of the frame story, get me back to the action!, what is the real reality, something you find in Borges, a story inside the Arabian Nights, what the particular story is called, a prophecy, meets a man and talks to him, something that he wanted, that man has had a dream, it’s a circle, The Circular Ruins, a man who self creates in dream, The Green Meadow, The Crawling Chaos, the landscape is a human body, it’s a skull, a man lying down in hospital, decaying and decrepit body, so interesting, the connection between mind and body, sick the last week, high fever, see many things, experiencing things that are not real, you can be in a waking dream state, the normal activity, faces, swirling, crazy outsider artist, devilish landscape, look up at the ceiling, painted in a pattern or lack of pattern, a cloud that looks like a dragon or a horse, the interpretation and the generation, real connections, a map and perception of the world, something that’s real outside of you, a piece of fiction, narrowing the reality to just the words, no reality other than the words, combined through the ears, the eyes or fingers, as real as a dream but more concrete, it’s cool, magic items, magic coming to our world, time travel, expand this out, headcanon, essentially in the Dreamlands, if the world is bigger than the city, his sister, the people who build the blocks, the collective unconscious, public domain, the dragon that was the key, wind up the dragon, largely lost, a kid’s nursery from 1910, the toy soldiers, Christmas presents, what it is constructed around, propagandistic toy soldiers and sailors, without the Jurassic Park or Star Wars branding, marketing to kids, blocks are handmade by the servant, the factory works, it really is the LEGO movie, it is good, whatever’s on the streaming service, curate everything, the Barbie Movie, addressing right away, doesn’t mention the CIA, Barbie can be any job that she wants, arch and meta and clever, that was for adult women and men and kids, H.G. Wells doing his Floor Games, collecting He-Man figures coming out today, his sister reappears in the world, not conscious of it per se, the husband is Julius Caesar, read it very subversively, childhood sweethearts, he’s got a kid he needs a mom for, an integration not a horror, the sister and not the parent, makes the resentment more, you’ve already been betrayed, you’ve already lost your parents, 17 brothers and sisters, how big a deal is it?, the more tenuous your relationship with your parents, mad at my father when he’s dying of cancer, it’s not fair, child logic just amps it up, he’s left alone, unless you work really hard, she’s whisked off to the honeymoond almost immediately, thank you, every two years or so, get well soon, this really fund story, better known, three other lives, the magic country, the magic land.
