The Throg task force struck the Terran survey camp a few minutes after dawn, without warning, and with a deadly precision which argued that the aliens had fully reconnoitered and prepared that attack. Eye-searing lances of energy lashed back and forth across the base with methodical accuracy. And a single cowering witness, flattened on a ledge in the heights above, knew that when the last of those yellow-red bolts fell, nothing human would be left alive down there.

When Raf Kurbi’s spaceship from Earth burst into unexplored skies of the far planet Astra, it was made welcome by the natives of a once-mighty metropolis. But Kurbi was unaware of three vital things: (1) that Astra already harbored an Earth colony – descended from refugees from the world of the previous century; (2) that these men and women were facing the greatest danger of their existence from a new outburst of the inhuman fiends who had once tyrannized Astra; and (3) that the natives who were buying Kurbi’s science know-how were those very fiends – and their intentions were implacably deadly for all humans, whether Earth born or star born!

Alan E. NourseALAN E. NOURSE, (August 11, 1928–July 19, 1992), was an American Science Fiction author and physician. He wrote both juvenile and adult SF, as well as nonfiction works about medicine and science. His SF works generally focused on medicine and/or psionics. Nourse had helped pay for his medical education by writing short stories for magazines and after graduation he had a column in Good Housekeeping magazine. An author of eleven novels and dozens of short stories, Robert A. Heinlein dedicated his 1964 novel Farnham’s Freehold to Nourse. His popular non-fiction writing included many books on sexually transmitted diseases.

When Dal Timgar, of all in his medical class, was denied assignment to a general practice patrol ship going out from Hospital Earth to serve the medical needs of the Galactic Confederation, it seemed to him that his eight years of study in the great medical center of the galaxy had ended in failure. He had worked hard and stood at the head of his class, but Dal was different from his medical colleagues in one important way. Born on a planet of a distant star, he was the first son of an alien race to attempt to become a qualified physician of Hospital Earth. Dr. Thorvold Arnquist, a power in Earth’s medical council, is determined that Dal Timgar shall have an equal chance with his Earth-born classmates to prove his skill as a physician and to earn his rank as Star Surgeon. He succeeds in getting Dal assigned, under protest, to the patrol ship Lancet, where Dal is faced with the full responsibilities of a patrol physician as well as the hostility of some of his crewmates. As the Lancet responds to calls of all kinds on planets of distant and unknown star systems, Dal’s skill and judgment as a surgeon are tested to the utmost. But it is not until he is confronted with a dreadful decision, which he alone must make, that Dal faces the final test–a test that will determine once and for all whether he is ever to become a Star Surgeon.

His tales featured protagonists who confronted realities that were either incomprehensible to human minds or fundamentally alien. His Cthulhu Mythos, are his best known works. The story indirectly tells of The Great Race of The Yith, an extraterrestrial species with the ability to travel through space and time. The Yithians accomplish this by switching bodies with hosts from the intended spacial or temporal destination. The story implies that the effect when seen from the outside is similar to demonic or spiritual possession. The story is told through the eyes of Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee, an economics professor from Miskatonic University who is “possessed” by a Yithian. Peaslee fears he is losing his mind when he unaccountably sees strange vistas of other worlds and the Yithian library city. However, while he was experiencing a Yithian existence in earth’s ancient past, the Yithian occupying his body was experiencing a human one in the present day. But that was only the beginning of the horror…

Most of these “old ones” are out of print but once you know it exists you’re half way to finding it – though perhaps that’s not the wisest move. “In H P Lovecraft’s classic horror story, an old man consents to a radio interview. In that interview a number of terrible truths come out. The truth about an expedition to Antarctica in the 1920’s where everyone died horribly. The truth about an attempt to find the expedition’s mysterious killers. The truth about a desolate plateau in the heart of a frozen continent. The truth about life and intelligence on the planet Earth. And the truth about the prehistoric horror that still waits lurking… At the Mountains of Madness.”
