The Evan Tanner Series:
Evan Michael Tanner is the star of this globe-trotting adventure series. Tanner tells his own stories, in first person. He is a man with a vast literary knowledge and some super-hero like abilities, these stem from the fact that he never sleeps. Tanner fought in the Korean War and there had the sleep center of his brain destroyed by a stray piece of shrapnel. This made him a permanent insomniac. To fill the empty hours between dusk and dawn he reads constantly – filling himself up a desire to fight all the world’s revolutionary causes whilst simultaneously learning every language on the planet. Another Science Fictional aspect of the character turns up when Lawrence Block, having left Tanner to lie fallow for 28 years, wakes Tanner up from a suspended animation caused by a cryogenically induced cold-sleep.

The John Keller Series:
The first Keller novel started off as a series of short stories in Playboy magazine. He’s a very unusual hit-man. Like you might expect he has few friends or family, but he has a vibrant inner life – imagining relationships with his victims and collecting stamps. Keller receives his assignments from an old man or in White Plains, NY. Later, when the old man dies, he takes on a new boss, the old man’s assistant, a young woman named Dot. His assignments take him all over the United States, usually by plane. There he rents a car and stalks his victims in what might be called a wistful and amiable hunt.

This is a fix-up novel assembled from a series of connected short stories. First published in novel form in 1998.

If hit man John Keller had his druthers, he wouldn’t have blown his cash to purchase the official Swedish reprints of some stamps that will-truth be told-round out his collection nicely. Still, he couldn’t have known that hours later, on the verge of pulling his last job before retirement, his credit cards would be cancelled and his face would be splashed all over the news. It seems that Keller’s being set up for a fall, but then he’s never been one to go down without a fight.

‘All right’ Stick said. ‘you tell me. What’s the best way to make a lot of money fast? Without working, that is.’ Frank held up the palm of his hand, his elbow on the edge of the bar. ‘You ready for this?’ ‘I’m ready.’ ‘Armed robbery.’ ‘Big deal.’ ‘Stick…I’m talking about simple everyday armed robbery. Supermarkets, bars, liquor stores, gas stations, that kind of place. Now, you ready for this? I see how two guys who now what they’re doing and’re businesslike about it’ – he paused, grinning a little – ‘who’re frank with each other and earnest about their work can pull down three to five grand a week.’ ‘You can also pull ten to a quarter in Jackson,’ Stick said. And so begins the partnership of Ernest Stickley, known to his friends as Stick, and Frank Ryan. Armed not only with handguns, but with Frank’s ten rules for success and happiness. Stick and Frank enjoy success and the swag mounts up until, inevitably, the rules begin to be broken.

Bestselling crime writer Elmore Leonard’s explosive plotting and snappy dialogue find their perfect showcase in this spellbinding three-hour abridgment performed by Brian Dennehy. In Palm Beach Country, Florida, someone places a live ten-foot alligator in the backyard of the bigoted, redneck judge Bob Gibbs – known to all as Maximum Bob – and his wife, Leanne, a former Weeki Wachee mermaid. Not long after that, shots are fired into the judge’s house. It doesn’t take much figuring to conclude that someone’s out to get him and that the malefactor won’t stoip at the second try. There’s a ling list of suspects: Dale Crowe, who just got an outrageous sentence for a minor crime; his uncle Elvin, a killer on parole, raring to again; Dr. Tommy Casco, the drugged out former medical doctor; and Dicky Campau, who poaches alligators for a living. Somehow probation officer Kathy Baker finds herself in the middle of all this. She’s got to avoid two seducers – the judge and a homicidal maniac – and work with a young cop who interests her for more than professional reasons. Trying to pick out the would-be-assassin, among this assortment of bad guys, sociopaths, and punks is pure entertainment – as only Elmore Leonard, with his sharp ear and eye for the lowlife, can provide.

Her Sharing Knife series is also a Fantasy series but it is inspired by the part of North America she has spent her life – the country south of the Great Lakes – unlike other quasi-medieval Fantasy the Sharing Knife series is also inspired by the early 19th century. Nearly everything that Bujold has written has been made available in the audiobook format. Blackstone Audio has all of her Vorkosigan novels in print. In this third volume, Fawn, the young farm girl, and Dag, the seasoned soldier-sorcerer, set off to find fresh solutions to the perilous split between their peoples and encounter new hazards both human and uncanny. The farmers and riverfolk have long distrusted the power of the mysterious and aloof Lakewalkers, even though they depend on them for protection from the evil malices. The proud Lakewalkers, meanwhile, have exiled Dag after learning of his marriage to Fawn, the first outsider to be bound to a Lakewalker in their magical way. But as Dag’s natural Lakewalker ability to manipulate “ground energy” begins to develop in dangerous directions, he and Fawn realize that big changes are ahead.

As Dag’s powers have grown, so has his frustration with the Lakewalkers’ rigid mores. Fawn and Dag see that their world is changing and that the traditional Lakewalker practices cannot hold the malices at bay forever. Yet for all the customs that the couple have challenged, they will soon be confronted with their worst crisis yet. God is not dead: he has merely been exiled to an extraterrestrial planet. And it is on this planet that God meets Herb Asher and persuades him to help retake Earth from the demonic Belial. Featuring virtual reality, parallel worlds, and interstellar travel, The Divine Invasion blends philosophy and adventure in a way few authors can achieve. As the middle novel of Dick’s VALIS trilogy, The Divine Invasion plays a pivotal role in answering the questions raised by the first novel, expanding that world while exploring just how much anyone can really know — even God himself.

When catastrophic overpopulation threatens Earth, one company offers to teleport citizens to Whale’s Mouth, an allegedly pristine new home for happy and industrious émigrés. But there is one problem: the teleportation machine works in only one direction. When Rachmael ben Applebaum discovers that some of the footage of happy settlers may have been faked, he sets out on an eighteen-year journey to see if anyone wants to come back. Lies, Inc. is one of Philip K. Dick’s final novels, which he expanded from his novella The Unteleported Man shortly before his death. In its examination of totalitarianism, reality, and hallucination, it encompasses everything that Dick’s fans love about his oeuvre.

On a ravaged Earth, fate and circumstances bring together a disparate group of characters, including a fascist with dreams of a coup, a composer who plays his instrument with his mind, a First Lady who calls all the shots, and the world’s last practicing therapist. And they all must contend with an underclass that is beginning to ask a few too many questions, aided by a man called Loony Luke and his very persuasive pet alien. In classic Philip K. Dick fashion, The Simulacra combines time travel, psychotherapy, telekinesis, androids, and Neanderthal-like mutants to create a rousing, mind-bending story where there are conspiracies within conspiracies and nothing is ever what it seems.

The final book in Philip K. Dick’s VALIS trilogy, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer brings the author’s search for the identity and nature of God to a close. The novel follows Bishop Timothy Archer as he travels to Israel, ostensibly to examine ancient scrolls bearing the words of Christ. But more importantly, this leads him to examine the decisions he made during his life and how they may have contributed to the suicides of his mistress and son. This introspective book is one of Dick’s most philosophical and literary, delving into the mysteries of religion and of faith itself. As one of Dick’s final works, it also provides unique insight into the mind of a genius, whose work was still in the process of maturing at the time of his death.

Based on thousands of pages of typed and handwritten notes, journal entries, letters, and story sketches, The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick is the magnificent and imaginative final work of an author who dedicated his life to questioning the nature of reality and perception, the malleability of space and time, and the relationship between the human and the divine. Edited and introduced by Pamela Jackson and Jonathan Lethem, this is the definitive presentation of Dick’s brilliant, and epic, work. In the Exegesis, Dick documents his eight-year attempt to fathom what he called “2-3-74,” a postmodern visionary experience of the entire universe “transformed into information.” In entries that sometimes ran to hundreds of pages, in a freewheeling voice that ranges through personal confession, esoteric scholarship, dream accounts, and fictional fugues, Dick tried to write his way into the heart of a cosmic mystery that tested his powers of imagination and invention to the limit. This volume, the culmination of many years of transcription and archival research, has been annotated by the editors and by a unique group of writers and scholars chosen to offer a range of views into one of the most improbable and mind-altering manuscripts ever brought to light.

It’s America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some 20 years earlier the United States lost a war—and is now occupied jointly by Nazi Germany and Japan. This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that first established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction, breaking the barrier between genre fiction and the serious novel of ideas. Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to awake.

Martian Time-Slip:
On the arid colony of Mars, the only thing more precious than water may be a ten-year-old schizophrenic boy named Manfred Steiner. Although the UN has slated “anomalous” children for deportation and destruction, some suspect that Manfred’s disorder may be a window into the future. But what sort of future? In Martian Time-Slip, Dick uses power politics and extraterrestrial real-estate scams, adultery, and murder to penetrate the mysteries of being and time.
The Golden Man:
In the post-nuclear America, monstrous mutants roam freely. A government agency, the DCA, is formed to rid the world of mutants. But there is one of the new species that is not a monster: eighteen-year-old Cris Johnson. He is a perfect specimen of young manhood, an icon of masculine beauty. He is the golden man. But the DCA’s fear that he might mate and produce a new race of golden men with survival skills far superior to ordinary men makes his destruction paramount.

The mind-bending novels of Philip K. Dick transcend genre to explore the nature of consciousness and reality, placing ordinary men and women in congress with the unknowable and the awe-full. Valis, the first in Dick’s final trio of novels, is a theological detective story in which God is both a missing person and the perpetrator of the ultimate crime. The schizophrenic hero, a Dick alter-ego named Horselover Fat, begins receiving revelatory visions through a burst of pink laser light. As a coterie of religious seekers forms to explore these messages, they are led to a rock musician’s estate, where a two-year old Messianic figure named Sophia confirms that an ancient, mechanical intelligence orbiting the earth has been guiding their discoveries. Mixing Gnostic Christianity with Dick’s own strange philosophy, Valis is as funny and surprising as it is eye-opening.

The Earth’s drone rockets do not have a chance against the flexibility of a living organisms. Working in a military research facility, Kramer comes up with a system of installing a man’s brain as the central processor of a rocket. Since a pilot could not withstand the pressures of deep space flight, a willing sacrifice will need to be made. Kramer’s ex-wife, Dolores, remembers an old professor, Professor Thomas, that she and Kramer had attended in college. Professor Thomas is near the end of his lifespan. His mind is still agile, and it is agreed that it is his mind that will go into the rocket. The plan is for the brain to be alive but not conscious inside the rocket. But things don’t go as they should as some last minute modification allows Professor Thomas to return to consciousness and fully control the ship. And it’s not in the Professor’s plans to be a pawn to the Earth’s military.

George R. StewartGEORGE R. STEWART (1895-1980) Was an American novelist, toponymist, and professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley. His entire SFF output consisted of one Science Fiction novel Earth Abides (1949) and two mainstream novels with fantastic elements. Earth Abides is set in a post-apocalyptic landscape and depicts the remnants of humanity recovering from a global environmental disaster. A year after it was published it was turned into a two-part radio drama for the program Escape. It also served as inspiration for Stephen King‘s The Stand. Two of Stewart’s other novels (Storm and Fire) have elements of Fantasy (eponymous anthropomorphized characters). The former features a Pacific storm named Maria as its protagonist. This indirectly lead to the curious practice of the American National Weather Service using personal names to designate storms.
