Uvula AudioJames J. Campanella, podcaster, audiobook narrator, science popularizer and lecturer writes in to say:

Uvula Audio is starting a new bookcast this week. It is a science fiction book only in the sense that it has science in it and it is a fictional story, but it is an excellent young adult novel from 1971 which is now rare and long out of print. Starting tomorrow, we will be presenting Divers Down! Adventure Under Hawaiian Seas by Hal Gordon.

This was one of my favorite books in my youth and one of the books that pushed me in the direction of science as a career.

Podcaster: Uvula Audio Bookcast
Podcast: May 2009 –
The story concerns Kip Morgan, a student from Connecticut with an interest in undersea engineering. He comes to Hawaii to take part in the Makapuu Oceanic Center’s summer program. There he meets a number of other young scientists, including several from Hawaii, and gets involved in raising the “Ilikai,” a large canoe that sank in the 1860s while carrying a huge stone idol, a representation of the Hawaiian god Kane. Along the way, Kip’s friendship with archaeologist Julie turns romantic, he develops a rivalry with another summer student, and he has adventures under the beautiful Pacific. The story is also an excellent introduction to scuba diving and the Hawaiian language.

Audio Drama: The Flickerman

SFFaudio Online Audio

The FlickermanLance Dann writes in to tell us about his “interactive SF audio drama” called The Flickerman. Says Dann:

It’s an experimental SF piece that [has] received excellent reviews in the UK national press when the first series was broadcast on the radio in London (Resonance 104.4FM). It received a review in the national paper The Guardian that was particularly strong.

There’s a short introductory film HERE along with the first episode. It’s also got a standard podcast feed but you may prefer to listen right off the site – as you’ll need your browser handy for the full experience.

Archive.org: Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig

SFFaudio Online Audio

Internet Archive - Open Source AudioI don’t know if there exists a non-fiction book with more downloads than Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig. The Archive.org stats show it having been downloaded more that 13,000 times. That’s impressive. More impressive is how readable it is. The narrators are all amateurs and they occasionally mispronounce a word or stumble over the descriptions of the images and charts in the paperbook. It doesn’t matter though. The content is delivered extremely well – Lessig is an excellent explicator, and the book is highly relevant for anyone who visits this website. Americans in particular will find immense value in this audiobook. I highly, highly recommend it.

Those still unconvinced should have a look/listen to this April 17, 2009 powerpoint enhanced that Lessig gave at the University of Pennsylvania. It’s entitled The Forbin Problem – its title takes inspiration from the AMAZINGLY AWESOME Science Fiction movie called Collusus The Forbin Project.

Entitled Opinions: Google and the future of the Internet

SFFaudio Online Audio

Entitled Opinions (about life and literature)Entitled Opinions is a radio program (and podcast) from Stanford university’s radio station KZSU. It’s hosted by Professor Robert Harrison. Harrison teaches in the department of French and Italian – on the show his guests are usually literary or philosophical – but his November 11th 2008 podcast is a bit different being: “A conversation with Vinton Cerf about Google and the future of the Internet.” Cerf is an ex-Stanford prof and one of the co-fathers of the internet. It is a great conversation, with lots of talk about where the internet came from and where it might be going. They also manage to have a knowledgeable conversation about Star Trek (particularly TNG). Neato!
