The Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society has an awesome clubhouse

SFFaudio News

Bill Mills, of REB AudioBooks, sent me a link to an interesting video that he put together. Writes Mills:

I have been involved in helping The Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS) bring this worthy new video webcast series to fruition and I had hoped that you might be willing to mention it on the site. Of course, LASFS is a non-profit organization and my efforts, as well as all those connected with the production donated free of charge to the club. We all are essentially engaging in FANAC (Fan Activity), in support of this venerable institution deservedly known as “This World’s Oldest Science Fiction Club”!

The video is basically a short history of the club and a tour their wonderful facilities and offerings. While the video’s volume is okay there is a hideous hiss in the audio, but if you can get past it I think you’ll agree that the completely crazy people at LASFS are utterly awesome. They’ve got a sweet looking library too (though I didn’t see any audiobooks on the shelves). Check it out:

  1. Jesse,
Thanks so much for your support for LASFS and it’s new webcasts “LASFS Spotlight”. I do of course heartily agree that there is a bad hiss in the audio track As post production engineer for the project I fought it with all I could, but to remove any more of it would have so muffled Mr. Jackson’s voice as to be (arguably perhaps) equally bad. I had no choice but to use it as it is and bare the embarrassment. *sigh*

This first episode was a sort of ‘shake down cruise’ for the production unit and was recorded under totally different circumstances from which the rest of the L.A. based shoots will take place (in the LASFS Clubhouse, a’course). I suspect we’ll have other embarrassing little issues with the next few as well. But, with the interest and support of stalwart SF fans like you and the regular visitors to SFFAudio, there will be ample motivation to continue to produce these worthy shows and fine tune all the necessary elements required for such an ambitious, but still amateur, production.

Without viewer support and encouragement the energies and enthusiasm required to regualrly prodce this kind of project is hard to maintain and continue. So many such shows die on the vine after very few episodes. We want this show to continue for a long time, and there are certainly enough notable interviewees and entertaining stories of the club’s past, to keep producing them for quite awhile. Now, all we need is… YOU! ;-)

Thanks again for posting to the site and for your enthusiastic support for LASFS Spotlight.

  2. Jesse,
Oh and Yeah. You are not the only one painfully aware that there appear to be no audiobooks on the shelves and the LASFS library should have an Audio Books section. An opinion that I have been pitching to whoever I can there whenever the opportunities occur. Not as often as I’d like however, as I am based in Las Vegas and I don’t get down to the clubhouse much these days. But, perhaps they think I have a vested interest when I pitch the idea, being an audio book producer. So, I can only hope that someone else whose motives seem more pure will take up the crusade and get them to start such a section…. eventually.

    Ahhh, there’s always hope.

    Bill
