Star Ship Sofa: Fiction, and talk about it par excellence

SFFaudio Online Audio

Star Ship SofaRelentless blog-whore that he is, I gave my good buddy Tony Smith the task of writing up a bit about the latest offerings on his Star Ship Sofa podcast. Here’s what Tony (who thinks he can’t write) wrote:

“Following on from the brilliant series of Michael Moorcock stories, the one and only StarShipSofa has gone and got themselves a darn fine futuristic story by 2007 Hugo Nominee, Peter Watts… and if that wasn’t enough, hasn’t Peter Watts narrated this story himself and he also gives a small insight into how this particular tale came about. If you have not already subscribed to the StarShipSofa, then I urge all to do so. They have some fine tales due out soon from the likes of Harry Harrison, Kevin J Anderson, John Varley, Bradley Denton, Pat Murphy and Bruce Sterling among others – so be warned – subscribe or miss out on some fine oral delights!”

I love how Tony talks, and guess what, he writes just like how he talks – “oral delights” – just what kind of show is this?

Star Ship Sofa has consistently proved that it is THE podcast place in which you’ll find discussion of SF authors and their works. At this very moment I’m listening to Tony talk knowledgeably about Hal Clement (Show #73 |MP3|) – for some reason his sidekick, the unflappable Ciaran O’Carroll is absent from the latest show).

Radio Drama Revival talks WORMWOOD and podcasts Crazy Dog’s The Salmon Of Blackpool

SFFaudio Online Audio

Radio Drama RevivalThe WMPG radio show (and podcast) Radio Drama Revival recently aired a thought provoking interview with some of the talents behind the podcast audio drama series Wormwood. Host Fred Greenhalgh sez of it:

“I got the guys from Wormwood (www.wormwoodshow.com) on. Wormwood is a GREAT serialized mystery drama with broad appeal — conducted with a great sense of pacing, startling scenes and of course a storyline that keeps you begging for more. The two producers and a voice actor got on and just had a wonderful time talking about the show and what they’re trying to do.”

Its well worth a listen as the first season of this wickedly addictive show is set to conclude shortly. Listen in |MP3|.

Also on tap, though the SFF content is as yet unknown is the following:

Radio Drama Revival is airing Crazy Dog Audio Theatre’s The Salmon of Blackpool. As Greenhalgh sez:

“I needn’t harp on about the stellar caliber of Roger Gregg’s [the guy behind CRAZY DOG] work, but this is truly above and beyond even the high standards set by his previous work and is truly dazzling. If you want to talk about ‘audio movies,’ tune into this work — it is truly cinematic, and the gorgeous production, performances and sound design all combine to suck you into this tragic and gripping story.”

Crazy Dog’s work is spectacular, Roger Gregg is the Alfred Hitchcock of Radio Drama, so even if it turns out to be lacking any fantastic or horror elements this series will be worth hearing – have a listen |MP3| to part one.

Brain Twister by Mark Phillips

SFFaudio Online Audio

Maureen O’Brien of the Maria Lectrix podcast, has finished up a very cool sounding novel called Brain Twister. The author, Mark Phillips, “marries SF adventure with slapstick comedy” in what ended up being a Hugo Award nominated novel (it lost to Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers.

Astounding Science Fiction Magazine September 1959 That Sweet Little Old Lady by Mark Phillips

“Hmmmm…. Mark Phillips? Who’s that?” you ask.

Well, Mark Phillips was the pseudonym used for SF collaborations between Randall Garrett and Laurence M. Janifer. As Mark Phillips, Garrett and Janifer produced three SF novels featuring FBI agent Kenneth J. Malone. The stories originally appeared in slightly shorter versions in Astounding Science Fiction magazine, edited by John W. Campbell, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In fact, the first novel, Brain Twister (AKA That Sweet Little Old Lady) made the cover of the September 1959 issue (pictured above) and had several wonderful internal illustrations too HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE (all of the pics and the text can be found at Project Gutneberg HERE). Have a listen after you have a look…
