Our friend Joe Mahoney has posted a list and schedule on his blog detailing the new CBC Radio Science Fiction series he told us about earlier this year. Joe wrote:

Here is the current line-up for a special SF radio play series we’re running on CBC Radio this summer, Friday nights at ten pm:

July 1 Someone Just for Me.
July 8 Birth
July 15 Bonehouse
July 22 Pig and Pepper
July 29 ManRadio
August 5 The Intercom
August 12 Ice Screams
August 19 The Thing from Beyond my Closet
August 26 Phantom
Sept 2 Castle Grove

I produced and directed Birth (July 8th), written by Michael Lennick and Robert J. Sawyer, and did sound effects for ManRadio and The Thing from Beyond my Closet.

I think Someone Just For Me, ManRadio and Ice Screams may all be something we’ve heard before, as they are all episodes from the 2004 CBC Radio series entitled Winter’s Tales. The rest are likely brand new, never before broadcast!

A few news items today…

First, Robert J. Sawyer will be interviewed this Friday morning, April 15, at 10:30 p.m. (in every time zone) on CBC Radio One’s flagship morning show “Sounds Like Canada” about MINDSCAN. You can get it on the web at: http://www.cbc.ca.

Second, congrats to all the Hugo nominees! You can find a complete list of the nominees at Interaction’s Worldcon website. Of the fiction nominees, a few have audio versions:

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (nominated for Best Novel) is available unabridged from Audio Renaissance.

I found The Algebraist by Iain Banks (also a Best Novel nominee) available on audio at Amazon.uk. There’s no mention that I can see about whether it’s abridged or not. If anyone out there has more info, please let me know.

Shed Skin by Robert J. Sawyer (Best Short Story nominee) is available on audio from Deuce Audio.

And lastly, some bad news for SF audiobook fans. The Reader’s Chair, publisher of some very fine audiobooks, especially Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan series, has closed it’s doors.

Science Fiction Audio Drama - CBC EmanationsRobert J. Sawyer dropped a few more hints about the new CBC Radio One Science Fiction anothology radio drama series Emanations:

“Michael Lennick and I had a meeting at the CBC Broadcasting Centre to go over the second draft of our SF radio-drama pilot with the people Michael likes to refer to as “the boys downtown.” The script will be produced on March 17; our series is an anthology of standalone SF radio dramas with the overall title Emanations. The pilot script, “Birth,” deals with the accidental emergence of sentience among exploratory robots on Mars.”

And now a bit of bad news for Science Fiction audio drama fans. CBC Radio One’s potential summer replacement series “FASTER THAN LIGHT” has been nixed. Creator and developer Joe Mahoney reports that after three pilots (only one was ever broadcast) the potential series has been officially canceled.

But the news isn’t all bad. Mahoney reports that he’s involved with another CBC Radio project with the title “EMANATIONS” and that it has been greenlit! Mahoney calls it “a more of a straight up dramatic science fiction show” an anthology series. It is being written by Robert J. Sawyer and Michael Lennick and produced by Joe Mahoney. Production is scheduled for March 2005. The first half hour episode is entitled “Birth”. We’ll be sure to let you know when we have a broadcast date.

Deuce AudioFrom the Toot Our Own Horn Department… Announcing Deuce Audio!

The first two titles from our very own audiobook company, Deuce Audio, are available as of today for download from Fictionwise! They are: The Retrieval Artist by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, read by Stefan Rudnicki (2 hours, $4.99) and Shed Skin by Robert J. Sawyer, read by Stephen Hoye (45 minutes, $2.99).

Our goal is produce great audiobooks using excellent stories, performed by professionals, and at the best possible price. We hope you like them!

Though we’ve taken this baby step into publishing, be assured that SFFAudio will continue. Because we do this for the love of the stories and how they are told, we don’t expect our Deuce Audio publications to influence our objectivity when reviewing other titles. We certainly won’t review our own titles here (unless we find an independent voice to do so), nor will we fill your screen with “Buy me!” pop-ups. SFFAudio is a site for fans of science fiction and fantasy audio in all its forms, and it will remain just that.

All my best, everyone, and thanks for visiting SFFAudio!
