BBC Radio 7 - BBC7Dramatist Marty Ross points us to his three new plays entitled Darker Side Of The Border. Sez Ross:

“[These] plays are going out on BBC Radio 7 this week – three free dramatisations of classic Scottish tales of terror: one a day from Monday 14th March to Wednesday 15th, broadcast at 6pm and midnight, UK time. If you don’t have direct access to this digital channel, don’t worry – as each play gets posted on the Radio 7 website for 7 days precisely from the time of UK broadcast, so the first play gets posted 6pm UK time Monday and is available till 6pm UK time the NEXT Monday, the next play posted 6pm Tuesday and so on.”

The three plays are:
MONDAY – The Captain Of The Polestar
Based on the story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
An arctic ghost story. “A young doctor sails on a whaling ship.”

TUESDAY – Olalla
Based on a story by Robert Louis Stevenson
An eerie Spanish tale of tragic love and family secrets. “A soldier who falls in love while convalescing.”

WEDNESDAY – The Brownie Of The Black Haggs
Based on a story by James Hogg
A very strange tale of deranged, demonic passion. “Bossy Lady Wheelhope becomes strangely obsessed with a mysterious servant.”

The Bobbsey Twins At The Seashore was the third Stratemeyer Syndicate‘s longest running series. It details the semi-nauticaul adventures of the Bobbsey family, which includes two sets of fraternal twins: Bert and Nan, who are 12 years old, and Flossie and Freddie, who are six. I got my copy through an inheritance. My grandmother had kept many of the books that her five sons grew up with. Based on the penciling in this one I’m guessing it was greatly valued by my father. He put his name, address and phone number in it, probably when he was around five years old. By the time I got to it, the other day, both the front and back covers had fallen off, and all the previous repair work only just held the pages in. So, with great pain, I cracked the remainder of the spine, peeled off the masking tape and now, with the help of a couple of students and a $500 scanner, I have a digital picture book edition to enhance our enjoyment of the audiobook. |PDF|

There’s an interesting documentary about Jorge Luis Borges over on RadioArchive.cc. Its presenter, Peter White, traveled to Buenos Aires, talked to a Borges biographer and a former student. He sits in the club that Borges sat in and walks the streets where Borges walked. The focus here is especially on Borges’ blindness, but the documentary is good for those who are still sighted too.

Here’s a nice surprise! The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis! The Listener, who runs the ever admirable Free Listens blog, sez this:

Rating: 10/10

I’m absolutely amazed that Ancient Faith was able to get permission from HarperCollins and the Lewis estate to podcast this novel. Hart has a pleasing British accent and the confidence of someone who is comfortable in front of a microphone. She makes a couple of repetition errors, but is otherwise flawless. The recording quality is very good, as is befitting such a professionally produced podcast. The other books in The Chronicles of Narnia series are also available for free through the same website, so head on over to collect all seven books.
