Matt Watts: CBC Radio Drama “Mothballed”

SFFaudio News

CBC Radio OneMatt Watts, creator, writer and star of Canadia: 2056, has posted a surprisingly upbeat (but downbeat) journal entry about the sad future of CBC Radio Drama to his blog. Sez Matt:

“…and with the CBC’s recent cutbacks, the questions have turned more to the future of radio drama in general.

The official announcement is that radio drama will be ‘reduced’.

Sadly, this doesn’t look to be the case.

The project that is in the pipeline will be seen through, and after that, Radio A&E has decided the best thing to do is to cut their losses, redeploy the staff into other positions and put drama on ice until funding is reinstated.

So, it looks like there’ll be no new radio drama for a while.

It’s a very sad time for me, and for my colleagues and friends in the drama department.

But, it’s a sign of the times, and instead of being bitter and angry, I think the best thing to do is to be understanding, and to try and hope for the best. This is genuinely one of those ‘greater good’ times.

For me, it means that I have to move on, and start looking for other mediums and formats to write in.

I will say, that writing for radio has been one of the great joys in my life. I could honestly write radio drama for the rest of my life, and be more than fulfilled and satisfied. I love it. Writing Steve, The First was an experience not unlike being thrown into a pool and discovering that you already know how to swim.

I’m one of the lucky few who found something they were good at, enjoyed it to the fullest and had a good run with it.”

Explaining why he thinks the cutback happened Matt said this:

“The sad truth, and reality, is that it [radio drama] doesn’t get that many listeners, and it doesn’t justify the cost. And these things have to be taken into account – these are the times we live in.”

My thinking is that there is actually quite an audience for audio drama, especially audio drama of as high a quality as Matt and his team at CBC Radio’ A&E department were producing. The main problem is that CBC’s radio drama are on the radio. I love the CBC and CBC radio programing in particular – but the reality is nobody I know listens to the radio anymore. We are listening to the podcasts of the radio shows. But ACTRA has not come to any agreement with CBC on podcasting, so none of the shows with acting in them are getting podcast!

The reality is that forcing an audience to tune in, in the middle of the afternoon, or late on a Sunday night is not the best way to showcase an audio drama anymore.

ACTRA needs to get it’s act together, go over to CBC radio (just a 7 minute cab ride), hammer out a deal on internet distribution and together SOLVE THIS SHIT. UPDATE: Apparently ACTRA has now “come to an agreement” with CBC, and what’s holding up CBC radio drama from being podcast is the writer’s guild. Yay! This is even better news because the Writer’s Guild of Canada HQ is only a “5 minute” walk away from the CBC HQ!

Writers Guild Of Canada to CBC Headquarters

CBC isn’t entirely off the hook though. More of CBC Radio needs to be podcast. CBC needs to be putting even more effort into living up to what the audience really wants:

The Canadian Podcast Corporation.

The future of CBC is online. The CRTC is all worried about Canadian content on the internet. I think we have the content and the talent, but what we don’t have is all that Canadian content on the internet.

Mini J. Michael Straczynski interview on Amazon.com

SFFaudio Online Audio

Amazon.com Screening RoomAmazon.com‘s Screening Room has a 12 minute interview with J. Michael Straczynski, talking to him about the upcoming Babylon 5 Lost Tales DVD release and writing in general. The WMA file is available HERE. UPDATE: try clicking on THIS and following the textual links to the WMA file. Damn WMA! One attentive reader pointed out there is a direct link to the |WMA|. Thanks!

I’ve just read a review of the DVD by a lucky viewer who got a copy more than a week before the July 31st release date. That reviewer described the new direct to DVD show this way:

Wow! If anything felt like we were coming home, this did – Absofragginglutely! Joe promised he would knock this one out of the ballpark and he delivered. Direct to DVD is the way for the B5 universe to survive.

Really looking forward to this DVD. And, Apocalypse Al must be freed.

Commentary: Radio Drama from J. Michael Straczynski SHELVED! Let’s get it aired!

THE FREE The Adventures Of Apocalypse Al CAMPAIGN

In 2006 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio One division developed and produced a 20 part Radio Drama series called The Adventures Of Apocalypse Al, the show was written by Babylon 5 visionary J. Michael Straczynski. But, CBCR1 has recently decided the show will not air nationally in Canada.

We have a big problem with that. And we think you should too.

This isn’t a matter of wasted tax payer money. We love CBC Radio, we want CBC Radio to live long, its staff and talent to keep producing their exceptional works. We just don’t think its right that completed and fully produced program not be aired. This is J. Michael Straczynski! His storytelling ability has been proven, the guy knows and loves radio drama. Let’s get this show on the air, podcast, or at the very least released on CD.

Inquiries by fans wondering what’s happening with the show have been receiving polite explanations such as this one:

>Thank you for taking the time to contact the CBC.
>
>As of this point in time, we have not received any notice that this
>program [The Adventures Of Apocalypse Al] will be airing on
>CBC Radio in the near future. I should however point out that it is unlikely that >this program will be made available by podcast. With the majority of our comedy
>and drama programs, we have broadcast rights and not distribution. This
>will, however, depend largely on the agreements negotiated with
>producers, actors, etc.
>
>The ideas, opinions and questions of our audience are important to the
>CBC if we are to remain relevant as the national public broadcaster. Your >comments and questions will be entered into our Audience Reaction Report >which is circulated among our senior producers, programmers, and executives, >including our President and CEO…

But CBC producer Joe Mahoney (who worked on the series himself) has posted even straighter dope about the show’s fate on his blog:

“Somewhat to my astonishment I’ve learned that The Adventures of Apocalypse Al, the twenty part series of five minute radio plays we produced last year (written by none other than J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame), will NOT be aired nationally anywhere on CBC Radio. It is possible that it will be picked up regionally here and there, but I will have no way of knowing when and where.”

I think we could all live with a regional CBC Radio One program airing the series. But how do we even make that happen?

That’s where you all come in.

If you have a blog, and love the work of JMS, write about this problem. If you loved Babylon 5 and have a podcast, talk about this issue. If you work for one of the many CBC Radio One regional programs inquire about airing the show get the show for broadcast – it is available! We want to hear The Adventures Of Apocalypse Al and we’re determined to see it happen.

Folks, let us know what you’re doing and what you’re saying and we’ll post a list of where and from whom this campaign is getting attention.

The Adventures Of Apocalypse Al

SFFaudio News

CBC Radio OneI’ve just read possibly the worst news ever about a CBC Radio program. CBC producer Joe Mahoney writes:

“Somewhat to my astonishment I’ve learned that The Adventures of Apocalypse Al, the twenty part series of five minute radio plays we produced last year (written by none other than J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame), will NOT be aired nationally anywhere on CBC Radio. It is possible that it will be picked up regionally here and there, but I will have no way of knowing when and where.”

Now I am not saying it’s time to break out the pitchforks and torches yet, but I’m about half a micron from a total meltdown here. We’ve been waiting for this show for more than a yahren now! The show’s finished. By all the internal reports that I’ve read its a solid show. It was written by J. Michael Straczynski! Can’t find room in the schedule? What the fuck CBC? Come on.
